Flaky USB with keyboard(s)
My USB keyboard stops responding with some frequency. I can be typing away
and all of a sudden there is no response. At other times it will either skip letters or insert two or more of the same one. It is almost as if the keyboard input routine has stopped polling the KB temporarily. It will resume functioning after a bit, varying from 10 seconds to a minute or so. Additionally, it will resume functioning if I unplug it and immediately plug it back in. It just started doing this a couple of weeks ago...AFAIK, nothing changed that would cause it; i.e., no new programs installed, etc. It is normally plugged into a port on the motherboard header, makes no difference which. It does the same on other USB ports both powered and unpowered. Another USB keyboard does the same. I have tried "uninstalling" the KB and all the USB and HID items in Device Manager. OS is XP-SP3. Thhhhhhdg hing has stalled three times while I was typing this post. I left the errors it spit out at the start of this paragraph to show what it did when it resumed. The sentence was supposed to be, "The dang thing has stalled...". It is very annoying, anybody know what's going on? -- dadiOH ____________________________ dadiOH's dandies v3.06... ....a help file of info about MP3s, recording from LP/cassette and tips & tricks on this and that. It (they, I have two keyboards) work fine on other PCs. The mobo is an Asrock AOD-796GX-128M. There had been no problem with the keyboard over several months, just the last couple of weeks and - as I said in the OP - nothing pertinent has been changed by me during that period; *XP* may have changed something, it seems to have a penchant for whimisically reinstating ancient things. -- dadiOH ____________________________ dadiOH's dandies v3.06... ....a help file of info about MP3s, recording from LP/cassette and tips & tricks on this and that. Try a different keyboard to determine whether it is a hardware issue with the keyboard itself or further in. It could even be software - but that is a different test. (The different test - boot with a BartPE CD and type on the keyboard for a long period - although given the frequency you describe - long is relative.) -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

it seems that is two
different kb's were experiencing the problem on that motherboard, then they may not be the problem. the issue seems to be focused on the motherboard "or" you have some software running in windows that is interrupting the data from the kb. the processes in task manager would provide a clue. but you would have to keep it open up on the desktop to see which process is taking precedence at the time you get the intermittent kb problem. you may simply want to start with a clean boot and maybe cycle your index service to the opposite state, for the time being. -- db·´¯`·...¸)))º DatabaseBen, Retired Professional - Systems Analyst - Database Developer - Accountancy - Veteran of the Armed Forces - @hotmail.com "share the nirvana" - dbZen ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "dadiOH" wrote in message ... db wrote: sounds like something your laptop maker needs to review.
