XP Home takes ages to shut down

Default XP Home takes ages to shut down

I have a new computer with Windows XP Home installed.
When shutting down it takes an age saying "Windows
shutting down, please wait..." or something like that.

I thought this was normal, but I have now seen others
which shut down much faster. Any ideas??
