Programs closing unexpectedly

Recently my computer, Windows XP SP3 has started closing programs unexpectedly. e.g. I open Photoshop 7, it opens normally I load a photo all fine, I then try to open another photo using the 'Browse' feature and the program closes, another example, I open my Backup program, "Genie Backup Manager", it opens OK I then attempt to edit a Folder and the program closes. Event Viewer does not show anything unusual, I have scanned the Hard Drive, using Windows Defender, Malwarebytes, SpyBot, AVG and none of them report any virus or trojan etc.
Can anyone suggest another area or 'thing' I could check to try to erradicate this problem.
I would be most gratefull for suggestions.

Try disabling non-Microsoft handlers and extensions using the utility,
and see if there is any change. You can use the suggestions for
disabling shown in the section titled "Effective usage of ShellExView to

Even though this isn't a right-click problem, the shell extensions may

Thanks Glen for your reply, I have downloaded ShellExView and will try the various options suggested. I see that I have some 344 Extensions so it will take me some time to go through them, selecting the possible likely onces for temporary disabling, it will be interesting to see how it goes.

If you have that many, use the method described.... disable half of all

occurs. If it does not, the problem extension is in that disabled group
and you cab use the same procedure with that half to narrow it down.
If disabling the first half does not help, enable them and disable the
other half of all your extensions, then test for the issue. If that
helps, then you know the problem is in that half.
If you get no improvement from disabling both, then the issue is from
something else.

Thanks for your continuing interest in my problem. I started to disable half of my Shell Extensions including the Microsoft ones, but when I attempted to do this, the following message was displayed:-
"Shell Exttensions created by Microsoft are part of the operating system and disabling them may lead to a system that cannot boot properly. You should only disable the Shell Extension that you suspect they cause a problem"
I am a little uncertain about proceeding in view of this message and would appreciate your further comments.

"Company" in your displayed list of extensions (actually click the box
that has the word "Company" along the top of the list), the extension
list will be sorted by company name.... just don't select any of the
Microsoft ones when you disable. You can select multiple items by
holding down the CTRL key while clicking on them, just as you can do in
Windows Explorer.

I did as you suggested, then rebooted my computer and tried the Programs I had the problem with, without any improvement.
It may be that if it is a Shell Extension causing my difficulty, it must be one of the Micrtosoft ones.
Have you any other ideas? I am thinking of doing a Repair using the original installation disk, but that is a huge job bearing in mind SP 2 & SP 3 etc. etc. and all the upgrades since then.

In the event you need to perform a repair install
(though it may not even fix your problem) my advice is to create a
slipstreamed XP_SP3 cd

I have experimented further with some of the programs on my computer and the current situation is that this problem seems to be related to Photoshop 7 and Paint Shop Pro when opening files from one particular folder of photos.
There seem to be two faults, sometimes when I try to open a particular Folder within Photoshop or Pain Shop Pro, as soon as I click on the folder it closes/crashes, sometimes I can open any photo without any problem and can then works on that photo, however when I close it and enter the Browse facility to open another photo, the program just closes/crashes. I also use a DOS program which does exactly the same thing, open a file, close it try to open another file and the program closes/crashes.
I have not yet been able to replicate this problem with any other programs or files, but am still trying and will let you know if I can repeat the problem elsewhere.

It may be a problem with the properties of that folder, or of some of
the files in that folder. RtClick on the folder, then click on
Properties, and see if something is set to ReadOnly; if so, click the
ReadOnly box and disable it. Or, there may be a problem with Owndership.

I agree with Bob, if it is only involving that one folder.... I'd be
looking at an issue with the folder, or a file in the folder. Could be
a permission issue, or a file with a name issue (too long, illegal
characters, odd character for the first character, etc). Try making a
new folder elsewhere, and copy the files in the problem folder to the
new folder, then see if opening the files the same way from the new
folder causes the issue.

Thanks Bob and Glen.
The Folder Attribute is marked 'Read Only' I unset this and click 'apply' and click OK. I then check the Prperties again and the Attribute has reverted to 'Read Only' I don't know how to overcome this.

I will make a new Folder and copy the files into it and see how I go on, I will report back.

You don't..... that's normal for WinXP, just leave the read-only alone
on the folder, that's not the cause of the problem.
