Default MMC 32- 64-bit choice every time I start it...?

Whenever I open computer management, Windows pops up a window asking if I
want the 32- or 64-bit version of the MMC snap-ins. The two lists are
identical. I choose 64 because the Win 7 installation is that, but does
it matter? Furthermore, can I lock down my preference so I don't have to
answer the question every single time?

TIA,

Jason

Why do you have 2 versions installed?? is it a 32 bit programme or
x64?? Can you uninstall one??

you can take the question out if you edit the startup file.

I Googled your problem and arrived he

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...(v=vs.85).aspx

It seems that number 5 describes your situation.
As to what it all means I haven't got a clue, hopefully somebody who has
will be able to help.

Dave and I have the same question ... where's the command line? I suspect
a registry tweak will fix this, but I've yet to find it.

Sometimes software will add additional context menu entries, e.g. CCleaner can add
'Run CCleaner' to the context menu of the Recycle Bin.
Has anything been added to the Computer\Manage context menu?
When I right-click Computer and select Manage this registry key is read:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Manage\command
and the command line is :
%SystemRoot%\system32\CompMgmtLauncher.exe

The command is also he
HKCR\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Manage\command
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Manage\command

Is yours different ?

There are a few additions, CCleaner for example!

When I right-click Computer and select Manage this registry key is read:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Manage\command

HKCR\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Manage\command

Entries in my registry are the same.

I've been reading up a bit more about snap-ins.
The Computer right-click 'Manage' option eventually runs compmgmt.msc via mmc.exe
These *.msc files are actually xml text files and compmgmt.msc is a collection of
smaller snap-ins, like eventvwr.msc, taskschd.msc etc.

You can have a look inside an msc file by opening it with Notepad.
(Be careful not to set Notepad as the default program).
The snap-ins will be listed by their CLSID which you can check by
searching the registry.

You can create your own console by running mmc.exe and going to
File Add/Remove Snap-In...
On the left you'll see all of the available snap-ins.

As you are getting a popup box asking which version to run I think
one of the snap-ins that are included in compmgmt.msc is missing/corrupt
or the compmgmt.msc file is itself corrupt somehow.
So I think maybe running the System File Checker would be worth trying.
From an admin command prompt: sfc /scannow

I'm really disappointed to see (if I interpret what you're saying) that
they've still left the "always use this program for this type of file"
box ticked by default even in Windows 7. Sure, it's a handy box to have,
but IMO it _shouldn't be ticked by default_!

Someone did give me - can't remember if it was for '9x or XP, I think
the former - a way of making it unticked by default; IIRR it was a
registry hack. Maybe someone can find something similar for 7 (and XP).

As I suspected, sfc found nothing.

But, per your post, I made a Console that includes just the bits and
pieces I use frequent. It opens right up and doesn't ask any questions. I
have no idea if it's using the 32- or 64-bit versions, but this works
around the annoyance nicely. It also loads more quickly than the right-
click MMC because there are fewer snap-ins to load.

Thanks!

If you use Editpad or Metapad instead, it will be the default. Both are
free, and much more capable than Notepad.

What I want is way of totally eliminating WordPad (and other MS progs
bundled with the OS.)

Now I know how to create a console I'm going to replace the
Computer Management one with a customized one as well.
