Default Update Mystery

I noticed that my Windows Update hadn't been showing in the notification
area for a while, so I looked at my settings, and I am set to download but
let me decide, etc. But, there was nothing waiting in the Update Window.
I clicked on check for updates, and it checks for hours and hours and
never stops checking. And, it shows:
Most recent check for updates: Never
Updates were installed: Never

I looked to see what updates had been installed in the past, and the last
ones were from 2014, but I know I've been installing almost regularly.

Any ideas?

TIA

I've seen that but didn't know if it was 'safe'. Will try after making a
restore point.

The FixIt's from Microsoft are safe. Whether they work is something
else. The very few I have used, worked.

Ken1943

Ken,
I also have a problem with available updates notification Icon not showing up on
the Notification area. I have updates set to download, but let me decide to
install. But I am not getting the notification when the updates are available.
What do I need to set to get it back? Running Win7 64bit.

I have the same problem. I think it was reported in an earlier
thread--and the answer was that Microsoft is no longer providing
notifications unless you let it install updates automatically. I check
Windows Updates about once a week to see what's available...

I do not choose the automatic option and it works just fine on my 7HP SP1 64

Course, I don't get notifications,

What I meant was that it no longer provides the notification icon in the
system tray unless you allow it to update automatically (in which case
you don't really need the notification icon...).

The same here since a few months or so. I have to check manually each week.
I've learned to live with it...

Run the Windows 7 Windows Update troubleshooter

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...roblems-instal
ling-updates#1TC=windows-7

I ran both the Microsoft FixIt and Windows 7 Update Troubleshooter.
FixIt ran, but gave no indication of what it did. The troubleshooter
ran, and said it fixed four issues, but couldn't fix:
Windows Update Error 0x800B0100 (2015-12-11_T-10_07_45A) Not Fixed
Cryptographic Service components are not registered Not Fixed

If I then opened the advanced summary window for the above, it showed all
six issues were fixed.

I read something about turning off certain services (authentication,
BITS, etc.) and then deleting the Software Distribution (SD) folder which
holds update settings/information. I could turn off services, but one
folder and one file in the SD folder could not be deleted due to being
used...I couldn't find where it was used. So, I backed out, but then got
into a Windows explorer has stopped working loop. After fixing that, I
gave up temporarily on this Windows Update problem. Maybe later today.

Charlie,
I posted a fix for this problem sometime ago, but it apparently went
unnoitced. Its called WindowsUpdateNotifier-v1.5.0 and the author
originally created it for users of 8.0 and 8.1 because MS decided to
remove it from those systems. It works just fine on Win 7 systems
though. I started having problems around the same time it first appear
(with the July 15 updates or there abouts) but none of the recommended
fixes (remove certain updates)didn't fix my problem.

I came upon this little application that not only fixed the problem but
added the option to get Defender updates automatically if one wants to.
I don't want MS installing anything without my seeing it first, so I
don't use that feature, although at the frequency that the Defender
updates arrive, I may change that one of these days.

I also run Win 7 64bit SP1

There is no installation, just download, unzip and run it.
