SP1 or SP2? Which do I need?
I have Windows XP Pro and SP1...I also have a ton of
updates which are taking up a lot of memory. I notice that most of those updates say SP2 beside them. My questions a Is there a Service Pack 2? If so, can I delete SP1 and simply run with SP2? If there is no actual SP2 then how can I compact all these downlaods to regain much needed space? My computer has a 40GB hard drive and yet it is so slow that a corpse would beat it in a race! LOL I have done disk clean up, registry clean up, and defrag...all on weekly schedule yet it is just slow. Any help would be appreciated and you may feel free to email me directly @ . Thanks so much for your time and effort.... Carla Kelly |

They are not taking up any "memory" they are takeing up small amounts of
hard drive space. you need both Service Pack 1 and ALL Pre-SP2 updates. Service Pack 2 is not out yet. "Carla Kelly" wrote in message ... SP1 or SP2? Which do I need?
Thanks so much for your quick response. Now I will have to
sift through my baby (computer) and see what is making her so slow. ) My CPU usage is through the roof most of the time and I am just miffed as to what to do next. Any suggestions? Thanks again, Carla K -----Original Message----- They are not taking up any "memory" they are takeing up small amounts of hard drive space. you need both Service Pack 1 and ALL Pre-SP2 updates. SP1 or SP2? Which do I need?
Carla;
SP2 is not due to be released till mid 2004. You need SP1 as well as the SP2 patches. However you can safely delete the uninstall files: Once you are sure you will keep Windows XP Service Pack 1. The files may be hidden, to show the file: Go to C:\WINDOWS Click the top TOOLS, click FOLDER OPTIONS, click VIEW Check the radio button. "Show hidden files and folders" Click OK and you should now see more files. Go to C:\WINDOWS and delete "$NTServicePackUinistall$" about 240 mb. Then go to Add/Remove Programs. Click Service Pack 1, there will be an error since you just deleted the file. Click YES to delete the shortcut. Use similar procedure to delete similar files for the updates. For speed issues: Run an updated virus scan. Or Scan for Viruses online: http://security.symantec.com/ssc/hom...ZTYMWPAZTJWUFJ Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files" (Windows XP) Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Clean-up Run Defrag. Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it. Check this link: http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.php Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spywa http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it) Or http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it) This may apply if you recently installed Windows XP Service Pack 1: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=815411 -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] An easier way to read newsgroup messages: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...oups/setup.asp http://dts-l.org/index.html "Carla Kelly" wrote in message ...
