Adjectival Windows 10!

You go to install something, and it doesn't work.

You go to the Inteernet and follow all the advice you can find, and it
still doesn't work.

I've just tried to set up Cortana and the damned thing seems to be
deaf and dumb.

1. I have set up the microphone
2. I have disabled the microphone's so called 'enhancements'.
3. I have adjusted the microphone's levels (now at 100%).
4. I have updated the microphone's driver.
5. I have tested the microphone with Sound Recorder and it
works.
5. I have rebooted the machine just in case.

But whether by typing or microphone Cortana still remains deaf and
dumb while task manager tells me it is contemplating it's navel at
great length. I would be greatful for any polite suggestions as to
what to do next.
