Thanks again Farmer If there were data on the drive you need, Dell will not retrieve it for you and it will be lost... If that's the case I'd install it internally on your computer...there is perhaps a 50% chance the drive itself is good...it could just as well be the electronics or the power brick OTOH: If there is no data on it you need and it's still under warranty...then yes...return it. If you open the drive the warranty would be void. The drive that doesn't work was purchased in March 2015 it's still under warranty and the laptop I am using is new so I really don't want to take either one apart with my limited computer knowledge. Thanks Farmer OK' if it's a laptop it would be very unlikely you'd be able to install a 2nd drive ...only once have I seen a laptop with a 2nd HD bay. Desktop...no problem Well been on the phone with dell support for an hour and finally the drive is working as one mention here the drive had lost it's drive letter so after an hour and the support guy taking control of the computer reinstalling drivers and testing many things it works. Thanks all who helped me here with computer verbiage. Farmer Glad it's working now! |

Well it just lost it's drive letter and not recognized by windows back to Dell for more help I wish I had paid more attention to how he fixed it I most likely could fix it myself if I knew where to assign the drive a drive letter. -- Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. Thanks but I no this is where you are suppose to be able to do this but I don't see or cannot find how to find the drive and give it a drive letter. -- Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. Disk Management.... Thanks but I no this is where you are suppose to be able to do this but I don't see or cannot find how to find the drive and give it a drive letter. You can use Device Manager (Start : Run : devmgmt.msc) to check the list of disk drives, and see if a USB based disk drive is present. For example, my external USB lists itself as an "Asmedia" disk drive, which is the brand of the USB chip in the enclosure. Once Device Manager has a detected drive, and there is no yellow mark indicating a driver problem, then flip over to Disk Management and see if the disk is listed as an item there. For disks with a certain identifier which is a duplicate of an existing drive, the disk can be set to "Offline" and in that case, the partitions will not be available for "lettering" :-) While you can successfully duplicate many of the myriad identifiers on a disk drive, there is one identifier that if you clone it, the second drive will be forced offline to prevent problems. My suspicion is the basic USB drive detection is not working, and for that reason, there is no item in Disk Management corresponding to the drive. The drive might not even be in Device Manager right now. It is your job to figure out why the drive is not detected. If the drive works in another computer, then it probably isn't an actual bad drive. Paul |

Disk Management Thanks Paul I've finally figured out how to find the drive and assign a drive letter with your help and others here. Perhaps I'll master this computer yet at my age learning new things is a challenge.
