I cannot find MS Internet Explorer
Windows 7 pro
I have C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\ and in it: "ieinstall.exe" which does nothing. Where is my MSInternetExplorer internet browser? Incidentally, my beloved EditPlus uses the MS browser engine and does so ok now. (I *may* have uninstalled MSIE in a moment of pique.) I downloaded MSIE 11 but it refuses to install on the basis that I already have a later version installed -- but MS offered it as the latest and best for Win 7. ???//??? |

Generally, it is almost impossible to uninstall Internet Explorer from a Windows system because it is embedded in the system to download updates and to do other Windows maintenance work. Apart from this, your IE executable file is at this location: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe Right-Click on the above file to create a desktop link or to pin to your start button or to do whatever you want it do with it except to delete it. Hope this helps. |

"Program Files" and "Program Files (x86) look the same for Internet Explorer -- NO "iexplorer.exe" System Restores when tapped at a point a week ago, shows iexplorer.exe in both Internet Explorer directories. However, if I restore to that date I'll lose a number of things I want to keep. That restore point is called a "Windows Update" "Critical Update" I see lots of restore points made by Microsoft, not by my schedule. As time goes by, I will less want to restore to recover iexplorer. UNLESS THERE'S A TRICK (?), it seems I will never have MSIE, except for testing my webpages in EditPlus. Which is all I ever use it for anyway. More and more this Windows 7 proves to be a monumental kluge. |

Go to Control Panels, Programs and Features, Windows Features and see if you turned off Internet Explorer in there. http://cdn5.howtogeek.com/wp-content...07/uncheck.png (From this article...) http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/2734/...rom-windows-7/ Another possibility, is your AV program quarantined the executable file for some reason. I downloaded MSIE 11 but it refuses to install on the basis that I already have a later version installed -- but MS offered it as the latest and best for Win 7. ???//??? Since you have a "Program Files (x86)" folder then you are using the 64-bit version of Windows 7. You did not mention bitwidth of the OS. So look under C:\Programs Files (the 64-bit programs repository) and under the Internet Explorer subfolder there. Where you looked should have several files, including iexplore.exe; however, that is not the program for Internet Explorer. It is just stub code that calls the real program over in the Program Files (no "x86") folder. That is only needed for users or programs that are hardcoded to run that copy of [stub] iexplore.exe. Even the iexplore.exe in the C:\Programs Files folder is stub code. Both are only 796KB in size. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Method_stub. Both load another program, probably in a .dll file. On the computer that I'm using to reply to you, I do not have a tool to list the exports (what methods or functions called from external files) for iexplore.exe. One that I know it calls, perhaps as a dependency to support any functions it has defined, is kernel32.dll. Others are msvcrt.dll and user32.dll. The old scheme of finding executables was to first look in the current (working) directory (now called folders because Microsoft wanted to use Directory for domain management). If not found then use the PATH environment variable to hunt for the executable if the folders listed in PATH in the order they are listed. In addition, Microsoft later added an AppPaths registry entry for where to find executables. The app paths are listed under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\App Paths where each subkey key is the filename of the executable with data items specifying what paths to use to find the executable. So, for Internet Explorer, there is an IEXPLORE.EXE named subkey and its data items point to C:\Programs Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE which is where 64-bit programs get installed for 64-bit Windows. The "(x86)" folder is for 32-bit programs. Windows will mask this folder as C:\Program Files\ to 32-bit programs because that's the program path that they used to use. There should be many files under C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer. Did you or someone granted to use your computer try to follow some web site's instructions on how to remove IE? Run C:\Windows\System32\control.exe appwiz.cpl and, in the left pane, click on "Turn Windows features on or off". Wait. In the Windows Features dialog, is Internet Explorer selected? |

There is no "r" before the dot (possibly this was originally intended to fit the 8.3 character limit). Anyway, I seldom use it except to make sure my website is working. Firefox (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/) is a much better browser. [snip] -- 60 days until the winter celebration (Friday December 25, 2015 12:00:00 AM for 1 day). That was easy. Or Control Panel\Programs and Features\"Turn windows features on or off" Maybe I didn't have the patience for the "Please wait" Turning on iexplore (ok, no final "r") restored it to both "Program Files directories (folders). This thing is making me feel utterly stupid. I wonder how other *users* (not computer experts) are doing? Switching to mobiles? Thanks for the detailed information. |
