Default Icon Arrow

Somewhere in the past I caused the removal of the Icon Arrow (Win7
64bit) on my computer.
Setting up another Win7 64bit. I copied the line in the registry just
as my old computer and the arrow is gone, now have a larger overlay
with a Windows icon of a folder.

Can someone give me the directions to remove the Icon arrow or any
overlays? I have used the .reg programs with no help.

TIA

NEVER change registry entries if there is an application that will
accomplish the same result. I can control whether to show the arrow on
shortcut icons by using the Ultimate Windows Tweaker, which I got four
years ago from
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/ultimate-windows-tweaker-v2-a-tweak-ui-for-windows-7-vista.
It apparently is still available from that Web site.

When I launch Ultimate Windows Tweaker, I select Additional Tweaks in
the menu on the left. The first checkbox under "Some additional tweaks"
controls whether or not to have the arrow: a checkmark means "no" and no
checkmark means "yes".

Thanks! That worked a treat! I started to download it and saw that I
already had UWT already. I had just forgotten what it was.

Just for curiosity's sake: Why do you want to get rid of the arrow on
the shortcut icon?

And it sounds like a bad idea to me, because that little arrow, at least,
tells you it is just a shortcut, and NOT an actual file (or whatever) that
it is pointing to. Without that, you'd have a harder time knowing what
you're dealing with (like in deletions or moves or renames, or what have
you).

(Admitedly it might look nicer, however)

I just don't like it. Have never used it. I know all my programs and
what are shortcuts.
Just a personal preference.

Your choice of course, but as far as I'm concerned, that personal
preference is a very bad one. It's looking for trouble. You say you
know what are shortcuts, but one of these days you will forget or have
something new that you think is a shortcut. Perhaps one day after
you've had too much to drink or had a fight with your spouse, you will
mistakenly delete something you think is just a shortcut, but isn't.

Those arrows that you don't like are an extra protection for you, and
you should keep them. Yes, you may never need that extra protection,
but on the other hand, some day you might.

I have Vista Shortcut Overlay Manager from now-defunct Frameworkx.com, and
it gives you options on No Arrow, Light Arrow, Arrow, or Custom Arrow
(allows you to pick a .ico file- haven't tested that one). Also allows for
the "shortcut" text to be removed when creating a shortcut. Seems to work
well in Win7, Win8, and Win10 (I've used it in all 3 versions; never had
Vista installed long enough to test it).

https://download.cnet.com/Vista-Shor...-10608910.html

P.S. I'm not quite as old as you, but if I forget what icon is a shortcut or
not, I just right-click on it and pick Properties. That will tell me in
short order whether it is or not :-)

No special software is needed for that. The text can easily be removed
simply by renaming.

I always remove the text, but keep the arrow. The "Shortcut" text uses
desktop space, but the arrow doesn't

Yes, if you remember to do that. As far as I'm concerned, trusting
your memory is not a wise thing to do for this, especially since if
you keep the arrow, there's no need to do it.
