Default remote desktop replacement?

Hi All,

Anyone know of a replacement for Remote Desktop. One that
works exactly the same (not VNC).

Many thanks,

Neither of these are _exactly_ the same as RDP, but they work ok:
Team Viewer (I use)
Citrix Xen Desktop (my employer uses)(costs $$)

Not exactly what I was looking for, but thank you anyway!

I pay for Go To Assist.

RDP is silent to the user, in the background IIRC, but Team Viewer
affords all the same services. File transfer, remote print and it's
great to show a user how to do things. And yes, as a software support
agent for 15 years I used Go To Assist.

If not exactly the same other than forground/background diff, then tell
us what you're trying to replicate.

The current version is TeamViewer 12. Any particular reason why you
are using version 8?

You've given-up on disabling TLS 1.0 on RDP? We use TeamViewer and
Lync/Skype desktop sharing @ work, and they both suck - As soon as you
open something with Admin rights, you loose control of that window and
can't do anything with it (the rest of the desktop keeps on working but
you're locked-out of the high privileged window). I never tried running
TV "As Admin" - maybe it fixes the problem, I shall try next time I run
into this problem. Anyway, just to say that RDP does not have this
issue, you have access to everything...

I can't make sense out of your question. If you want something that
works exactly like Remote Desktop, why not use Remote Desktop?

I do, and it's pretty painless. I log into my work computer (via a
VPN of course) and all the keyboard and mouse stuff works just fine.
The clipboard is shared between the remote and local machines, so I
can copy stuff from one to the other, even big stuff like folders.
When I print a document on my work computer, it comes out on my home
printer.

Why do you want a Remote Desktop that isn't Remote Desktop?

1) 3DES has something called "SWEET32 exploit".

https://www.openssl.org/blog/blog/2016/08/24/sweet32/

"use that information to recover something like a session Cookie.
Their experiments have been able to recover a cookie in under two days."

2) Some versions of Windows use 3DES when the FIPS switch is set.

3) On the version of Windows in question, removal of 3DES from the
crypto-suite, results in RDP stops working. Normally, with
crypto, there should be multiple solutions and fallback actions.
But apparently in this case, RDP just drops dead. Microsoft could
fix it but... they take their time when working on stuff like this.

Todd works on PCI Compliance. The Compliance tool checks for
SWEET32 issues (presence of 3DES). I understand some RDP users,
use a VPN or tunnel to protect the traffic in question, but
the PCI Compliance tool is not a mind reader, and it just
spots "issues" for you. Even if "you have a note from your
doctor", covering the issue.

If Todd can find a replacement for RDP, then he can switch
off 3DES on everything, and pass his PCI Compliance tests.
Or something like that.

HTH,
Paul

Since the customers are businesses and I am a business,
Team viewer is really expensive, about $800/yr each

I am tooling up to put RDP through Open VPN. The external
PCI scanner can't catch OpenVPN. (I have around 10 of
them that the scanner can't catch.) I just don't like
extra hassle laid on the user.
