Please help - Mouse Jumping And Clicking by Itself
Win XP Pro.
My Lenovo T500 mouse is jumping all over and it causes bad errors while using it. I have to constantly undo what it does. It skips and clicks by itself. It is a new MS Mobile mouse 4000. I got the MS drivers for Mobile Mouse 4000 Win XP and installed but that did not help. The bluetooth mouse worked much better but it went to sleep too often and sometimes just died requiring a reboot. The mousepad had no issues at all. The mousepad is active while the MS Mouse 4000 is in use. Is that a problem ? How do I disable the mousepad ONLY when the USB MS Mobile Mouse is plugged in ? Does that matter ? Is there some keyboard thing I can do to enable/disable the mousepad ? The only problem with the MS mobile mouse 4000 is its jumping and clicking by itself but that is a major problem that i must eliminate. Sysinternals process Explorer seems to indicate all is normal with 80% System Idle. |

I don't know any way to disable it _only_ when an extra mouse is plugged in. On this machine (under W7, but I think it's hardwired rather than part of Windows 7), there are two ways of turning the 'pad off from the keyboard: there's a long thin recessed key/button between the top of the touchpad and the bottom of the space bar, which toggles it; and Fn+F9 also controls it. I'd be mildly surprised if Fn+Fsomething doesn't toggle it on your machine too; have a look at the obscure little symbols on the F keys (the ones the same colour as the "Fn" on the function key). They'll operate regardless of whether there's a mouse, though. The only problem with the MS mobile mouse 4000 is its jumping and clicking by itself but that is a major problem that i must eliminate. Have you tried it (I presume it's a wired mouse) in any other machine - either with its fancy driver or just the built-in one? My wired mouse is clunky but does not have any problems. I cannot find a wired mouse that is small and has the side button I need ! unfortunately many of the function keys do not work but some do. I see no mousepad function key icon. I looked in Device Manager and found under USB controllers intel(R) ICH9 Family universal host Controller - 2934 and 2935 through 2939 293A and 293C A total of 8 entries. WHY ? I find USB Root hub there a total of 8 times. WHY ? Is that a problem ? J. P. Gilliver (John) wrote: In message , mrmr writes: Win XP Pro. Ah, so I take it that the mouse that's giving problems is a wireless one. unfortunately many of the function keys do not work but some do. If you mean mechanically broken, check out replacement keyboards - you might find they're cheaper than you expect. I see no mousepad function key icon. On mine, the icon could easily be mistaken for something to do with monitors, as it looks rather like a screen/monitor. But check the machine's manual - you should be able to find it at the manufacturer's website. I looked in Device Manager and found under USB controllers intel(R) ICH9 Family universal host Controller - 2934 and 2935 through 2939 293A and 293C A total of 8 entries. WHY ? I find USB Root hub there a total of 8 times. WHY ? A lot of the internal hardware is often on USB buses internally - webcam, card reader, sometimes touchpad and keyboard (though I've seen those appear as PS/2 as well). Some devices actually contain their own hub (card reader if it can do multiple formats, maybe webcam so it can do camera and microphone, ...). Though eight of them does seem a lot! Do any of them (or anything else in Device Manager, for that matter) show with a warning triangle /!\? Is that a problem ? Good question! Though I doubt it. [] -- J. P. Gilliver. Finally traced the problem to the Panasonic cordless telephone (land line) base station next to the computer. Moved that base station to another room, and all the problems instantly disappeared. Check for any form of transmitter close to the mouse, and move it further away. jim |

Since the wired USB mouse seems to be working OK and the bluetooth mouse
did not jump around, it must be radio interference for wireless USB ??? I am now looking for a small usb wired mobile mouse with a side button. I want small mouse. Like a mobile mouse. Anybody know of a good one ? If not, maybe a reliable bluetooth mouse that has a usb dongle. Preferably a small mouse with side button. My dongle-less bluetooth mouse shuts down too often to save power and irritate me ! Live in California. |

A wired mouse does not have this problem. I'm in minority, I know, but I've always used a wired mouse for two reasons: 1. They're generally less expensive than wireless. 2. I've never seen any advantage to the wireless ones. |

I _can_ see a _slight_ advantage to the wireless ones: in some situations, especially with some desk layouts, the cable can snag, kink, or otherwise interfere with the free movement I want. For me, that is more than outweighed by the (possibly only perceived) unreliability of the wireless-type connection (anonymous - i. e. where they don't tell you what they're using - or bluetooth), and also the concern - however remote - about battery rundown; however, each to his own on these. The cable snag can be overcome with a (still wired) trackball; those have their own advantages and disadvantages. I found I was forever accidentally brushing the touchpad while typing on mine when I used a wireless mouse. Thanks for looking up which function key it actually is on Lenovos (not having one, I wasn't able to explicitly tell mrmr which one, though I was fairly certain the function would be there). Although that's on/off regardless; I read mrmr's question as meaning he wanted the 'pad to be disabled when he plugged the external mouse in, and come back when it was unplugged. FWIR, on XP the two worked at once (unless you turned off the 'pad); on this 7-32, the 'pad driver disables it when it detects any "alternative pointing device". I'm still using a "Synaptics" driver for the 'pad (I've not actually encountered any other, even manufacturers' own drivers seem to be Synaptics inside) as I was under XP, but presumably it's a different version. (FWIW, I'd like the pad _not_ to be disabled so I _could_ use them together! Not important though - I rarely plug in a mouse - in fact the only time I have recently is when the pad misbehaves: plugging in and then removing a mouse seems to reset it.) -- J. P. Gilliver. Your suspicions are correct ;-) If I saw a significant advantage to wireless mice I'd spend the few extra dollars for one. I _can_ see a _slight_ advantage to the wireless ones: in some situations, especially with some desk layouts, the cable can snag, kink, or otherwise interfere with the free movement I want. Perhaps that's true for some people. For me, with my desk layout, it's not. For me, that is more than outweighed by the (possibly only perceived) unreliability of Yes. You can add that as number 3 to my comment above. the wireless-type connection (anonymous - i. e. where they don't tell you what they're using - or bluetooth), and also the concern - however remote - about battery rundown; however, each to his own on these. Yes. As always, each to his own. The cable snag can be overcome with a (still wired) trackball; those have their own advantages and disadvantages. (One being that the majority are either huge, or tiny but handheld [I had one of those that loops round your finger for a while]. I don't think I've seen one that's about the same size as a normal mouse, though I haven't looked for one.) I've tried a trackball a few times over the years, and I hate them. Perhaps if I had started with one instead of a mouse, it would be the other way around, but it's too late now; I can't get used to them--at least not easily. |
