Default Network troubles

My nephew's machine can tell if I plug in and take out the network
connection. It reports "acquiring network connection." All the other
machines in the house have network.

What should I check first?

Thanks

Please repost with more information, including what the problem computer
is failing to do, the type of network involved, and the type of security, if any,
being used.

The problem magically fixed itself. XP had some kind of option to
attempt to fix the network connection. I tried that, but it didn't
seem to work.

Instead of trying to put to words what the problem was, I went back to
the machine with the intention of filming the steps we took, and now
it is working.

Thanks
