Back to Win 7 Pricing (OEM vs MS) Professional
OK, I have a never used Win 7 Professional upgrade. I'd like to sell it
on a local radio swap shop. Looking at NewEgg, they have an OEM price of about $140. What is the downside of an OEM package. I suspect you get no support from MS. With MS, maybe it's 30 days? |

OEM - no support from MS, and it is tied to the first computer it is installed on (which for practical purposes usually means the motherboard). Also if yours is an _upgrade_, it is only valid to be installed on a PC that already had a qualifying Windows on it (for 7 I think that means XP or Vista, with XP qualifying but still resulting in a clean install of 7, and Vista giving the _option_ of an upgrade-in-place). The OEM may - with the above reservation about it not being transferable - be an install-from-cold rather than an upgrade-only; since OEMs are mainly for "system builders" (small computer shops or home constructors), it probably is. I don't know if you get any support from MS for an OEM edition: you might be right about the 30 days, though I suspect that's the limit for full retail. There's another thing that's about 30 days (IIRR), and that's the time before activation is required to retain full functionality. -- J. P. Gilliver. Hi Stan,
Support for the Win7 OEM version that the op mentioned is provided by the system builder or the person buying it an installing it on their own machine. That type of OEM version is slightly different than the Win8 Personal Use System Builder version - Msft does provide support. (Not to be confused with the only OEM version which are preinstalled by the PC manufacturer and responsible for o/s support). cf. Ed Bott http://www.zdnet.com/how-the-new-win...p2-7000003028/ qp If you purchase a retail upgrade or you install a System Builder copy under the terms of a Personal Use License, you receive support directly from Microsoft: Microsoft provides limited support services for properly licensed software as described at support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx /qp -- ....winston msft mvp "Stan Brown" wrote in message t...
