Default XP performance

About a week and a half ago my performance went south.
I'm running XP SP1 on a Zeon 2.8 GHz with 1GB RAM. I've
uninstalled Q811493 but that didn't help. I've narrowed
down the problem to the Workstation service. With it
started perfomance is like a 80286, with it stoped
performance is like a Zeon 2.8, but with no network. What
do I try next.

Check your network protocols and delete any that are not actually being
used.
