Default win10 calendar does not alert

I've been trying to use the Calendar that comes with Win10 and some
times it alerts me and some times its invisible and silent.

Do others have this problem?

I don't use any other calendar, like in a phone, so nothing to sync
with.

It's design is weak other ways too. If I give a time for the
appointment it doesnt' say a word until 2 hours in advance. If it's a
8AM thing, I have to get up maybe 6, but normally I sleep later than
that, so I have to be reminded the night before. So I just never give
a time for anything to be reminded the day before.

The settings don't seem to have anything helpful.

And the re-remind periods are no good. 5 minutes, 15, 1 hour, 4 hours,
24 hours. Where are 8 and 16 hours. And even 12 and 20?

I tried one other calendar and though free, it had so many options it
took extra time to make an entry and my head went round and round.

Also, the win10 calendar seems to take forever to open, or maybe it's
that it puts that big blue square on top of everything long before it
actually opens. (I know I can go back to the other window, but it still
makes me feel it takes forever to open.) In fact everything that used
to be in Control Panel that got moved to Settings seems to take forever
to open.

Or just let you enter a number 1-24! Or x hrs : x mins! Duh!

Could you tie the Windows Alarm Clock into
this horror story of missed appointments ?

There's supposed to be an Alarm Clock function.

I don't use it. With an occasional very rare exception (Calc and
Notepad), I don't use any of the applications built into Windows. In
my view, they are all very poor. There are almost always several
better free third-party choices available.

Actually the same is true of Calc and Notepad; there are several
better free third-party choices available. But my needs in both those
areas are slight enough that Calc and Notepad are adequate for me.

And when it comes to Windows Explorer/This PC, my third-party choice
isn't a free one. I've sprung for Directory Opus, which I like a lot.

I'm convinced. So which 3rd-party calendar do you use, Ken? Al? Paul?

I tried that. I don't remember why I'm using xplorer2.

The one I use isn't third-party. It's Microsoft's Outlook, part of
Microsoft Office 2016.
