I believe in the future, operating systems will not have names, they will be
intrinsic to each machine. We will not be able to change the OS or install a
new one. Like TV sets, they have OS but consumers don't know nothing about
them. They just turn on and choose the channel. This article doesn't say
it's the end of windows. At first, I thought they would stop producing
Windows and W10 would be the last one. But that's not the case. I don't want
to update to Windows 10 because I don't like big changes. If I could afford
I would consider buying a machine with Win 10. I've read the rumors about
windows becoming a service for renting and that scares me.

It already has a name. Why does it need another one?

As mentioned yesterday
"it could very well be current released version 10.x+1 and 10.x - same
o/s (i.e. down to 1 o/s) just different build versions and most likely,
only the latest capable of getting updates."

i.e.
Need updates ? Upgrade to the current version from qualified prior and
earlier version.

Other things to consider as MSFT evolves to 'Windows-as-a-service'

Build your own ? Ensure you have capable hardware that meets latest
version system requirements, supports UEFI and Secure Boot enabled, and
purchase and download 'Windows as a service' direct from MSFT Store
using a registered Microsoft Account with valid credit card for payment.

System Builder versions ? - imo, could be the end of those.
Pre-installed by OEM pc manufacturer's (MSFT partners) maybe the only
other choice.
- Like Office, no media. Product key is used to validate access to
download, final installed product key stored online in MSFT account on
MSFT Store.

Downgrade rights - probably another item that will disappear (and soon)

My smart TV is always applying updates. Sometimes to apps, sometimes to
the kernel, sometimes to the channel map.

Kind of a ****er if you have dial up to pull all this over the net. I saw an article on How-To-Geek newsletter that
there were still a substantial number of people using AOL dialup. I got a laugh outta that, after the "what the?"
feeling. But I guess in remote areas, dialup might be the only answer.

Ha! What's funniest to me is how Windows XP, released in 2001, is
_STILL_ better than Linux.

Because a proper personal computer operating system has to be adaptable
to all sorts of environments, platforms and uses.

That whole list above contains just single use devices which are
basically throw-away and mostly dependent on services provided by others
that have to be maintained and paid for.

The Microsoft current policy strikes me as a recipe for large support
costs. I don't believe they will ever be able to test against enough
different hardware and use-scenarios, and a forced update policy could
really backfire.

Windows has always had the advantage of flexibility and availability of
hardware add-ons. Making these work reliably in critical conditions is a
whole lot different from just using a core OS across tablet, phone and
desktop as a glorified typewriter/calculator and basic entertainment and
information source.

I think it`s really a question, what part of the OS they want to
update frequently. If driver models remain stable as long as in the
past and if only the GUI oder Webservices are updated, then this may
work.

How do we download *anything* onto a newly built PC without an
operating system already installed on it? BIOS or UEFI can read from a
disk or a USB stick, and that's about all.

I've never bought a ready built PC; I've only ever built my own and
have no intention of changing, and if Microsoft tries to insist that I
set up an online account with them just to be able to use my own
computer, that will be the absolute end of my involvement with them
and their products. I'm glad that alternatives are available.

Downgrade rights - probably another item that will disappear (and soon)

But not "wipe the disk and install Linux" rights, thankfully. Nobody
is going to stop me doing what I want to my own computer.
