Apple's "keep-them-dumb" overpriced devices lose luster in American classrooms

This is clearly borne out by the massive number of Linux servers, databases, embedded and the like Linux installations and the paltry proportion of Linux desktops out there v. Windows (of all thing$s) and Mac OS. Linux has been stagnant for a decade - about 2% or less of all desktop environments exposed to the web. Mac OS has been climbing steadily if slowly for a current 11% or so. Of course there is the economic factor to consider - people with means cannot afford free OS' such as Linux. Wastes too much time and doesn't provide the productivity apps required to make a decent living. Idiot Classic reply of the Linux fans. Can't stand the glare of truth. Idiot I own a MacBook, a iMac, a windows machine and several linux machines. You may now guess which OS I prefer most. And no, it is not OSX. I like that least of all |

It hasn't because the immense cost of "free" in the desktop arena. Yup. Linux has no unified UX strategy; it's a cluster **** for desktop usage. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. Lesser numbers than that determine dividends and profits. Yes, yes, Apple is *really* hurting, don't you see? HURTING!! : D -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. Duh. They also have more free apps, especially Windows. Bottom line (based on occasional Linux use): If all you want are the Big Four (email, internet, office suite, and viewing images/video), Linux is as good an eco-system as Windows or Mac, and technically more secure. Whether or not Linux is more or less secure than macOS is highly debatable. Windows is another story. : ) -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. Ad hominem's feel good but they don't really do anything for you when you can't defend your point rationally[1]. Being free does not overwhelm all considerations. People have actually heard about Windows and Macs, those two OS's are routinely pre-installed for the customer, and they have more commercial apps. [1] Yep, as I said ... Duh.{The height of 11th grade introduction to debating retorts.} And those computers offered by various mainline manufacturers that were cheaper because they came pre-installed with Linux. That should have helped. Hasn't. At all. (Dell, HP, IBM). OTOH, Linux in the form of Android has overwhelmed the mobile market; it has overwhelmed the embedded and supercomputer markets while being major contributors to the servers and database markets. Of course free doesn't overwhelm. How about actual practical usability in the real world? That is where Linux is an also ran. I'm not putting down the Linux OS. It's magnificent. Just not a useful desktop environment - not well enough supported by mainline productivity tool makers. The disparate and sometimes incoherent desktop "options" that Linux fans see as a strength are really one of its biggest obstacles to uptake. In that regard Apple have dominated in making a rationally designed(and attractive) desktop environment. And it's free too (upgrade wise). Just the h/w that is relatively more expensive than what the typical box-building Linux home/office user would buy. -- "If war is God's way of teaching Americans geography, then recession is His way of teaching everyone a little economics." ..Raj Patel, The Value of Nothing. |
