Default Registry-Value changes without user-input

Hello NG,

since I have recently reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP3 on a THinkPad
X61s-Machine I experience the following problem:

when I change the value
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Wa itToKillServiceTimeout

from 20000 to 2000 (to speed up the shutdown-process), the value has been
changed back to 20000 five minutes or one reboot later. Does anybody has an
idea why that happens?

Might there be any program on the system that changes back that value?

Thank you in advance,
Jonas

Why ControlSet001 instead of CurrentControlSet?

It happens when I change it in either CurrentControlSet, Controlset001 and
COntrolSet002.

Scan your system for malware.
(MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware are two decent free programs to do this
with - full scans.)

Is this a personal system - not joined to any domain?

You should be changing the setting in CurrentControlSet.

Try adding save settings on exit from line 54: right hand side

Added info:

Shutdown Event Tracker - Line 373:

Power the Computer Off or Reboot After Shutdown

This edit controls whether Windows should automatically power down or reboot
your computer once it has finished the shutdown process.

User Profile Hive Cleanup Service (Line 36) Right hand side

This edit automatically ends tasks and timeouts that prevent programs from
shutting down and clears the Paging File on Exit.

This edit allows you to configure Windows so that you receive verbose

in troubleshooting slow startup, shutdown, logon, or logoff behavior.
