new dell won't allow dialup after xp upgrade
I bought a refurbed dell inspiron 5200 that came preloaded with xp home. I had xp pro and automatically upgraded the dell to xp pro. I only have dial-up access at home and went to create a dialup internet connection (no, single mothers of 3 teenagers cannot afford dsl or cable along with cheerleading and soccer and band and tutoring and tutoring and... gods, help me, the occasional therapy sessions ). I couldn't set one up for modem connectivity. The dial up connection option is greyed out in the internet connection wizard. It only affords me a broadband or Lan connection for both network and internet options.
The PC came equipped with a broadcam v92 56k modem. The modem shows up fine in the device manager, it tests fine on the device manager. I've disabled reenabled, reinstalled the modem driver from the Dell site, I've had the network guy look at it, he's done all sorts of testing on it, looking at only the gods know what. Watching him is like watching god, but this one he can't figure out, so I guess he's not god. Is anyone else god out there and can help me figure this out?? BTW, I am petitioning heavily for the role of god, but I'll put someone else in control of computers. I just want the people and earth side. Anyway, he's the one who actually did the xp upgrade. I had also connected to the internet from work via the LAN connection, and downloaded all the windows updates, went to the dell site and downloaded the downloads for that modem from there and nothing worked. It still doesn't show as an option. I already HAVE XP Pro, and I don't want to have to buy it again from Dell. At one point in time when I was downloading something else from the Dell site it came back with the error 'this computer does not support this operating system". What does that mean? Does that mean a Dell Inspiron computer doesn't handle Windows XP Pro? Does it matter what notebook it's being loaded on (HP vs. Dell)? Everything else seems to work on it, but the dial up. The Windows XP Pro version came with my HP Laptop. and yes, I called Dell's world renowned service center, and explained the situation to them, and I was so totally disappointed - I finally wound up telling the young ignorant fellow bumbling through his knowledge database "You're no help, are you?" He told me I needed to contact my internet provider. Duh - why? I should be able to manually configure an internet connection. So there's the problem - what more do you need from me so I can get my dial up connection? Thanks, Kathleen |

new dell won't allow dialup after xp upgrade
I saw this before, when I recently wanted to upgade to pro.
It would not allow a dial-up connection to be created. I suspected it was because it was an early Pro version, prior to SP1. What's you Pro version? Maybe that's the cause??? Anyone??
