I have a Verizon DSL connection running through a Belkin router. My
desktop
is hardwired to the router via ethernet cable and I connect wirelessly to
a
laptop. I have been unable to download my larger backup files to either
computer. Both run Win XP Home Edition.

I called Verizon's tech support this morning about a different
connectivity
issue. I lost the ability to connect to the internet using Internet
Explorer, although Outlook Express worked fine for both email and the
Usenet
newsgroups. They did two line tests. The first indicated there was a
small
problem with the DSL line. After rebooting the computer, router and
modem,
the second line test indicated the connection was clear. I tried to
download my data file again, and was able to get about 10 MB downloaded
before getting the dialog box saying the internet connection has been
reset.
This occurred on both desktop and laptop. This was an improvement
because
previously the connection was gettging reset after downloading about 4
MB.

The time of day does not appear to have any effect on this problem. I
have
tried before 8 am, after 10 pm and in the afternoon.

I told the Verizon people that there are no problems with the web sites I
am
downloading from because I can download the files from other computers
outside my home. I don't usually download large files from any other
location, other than perhaps the Microsoft Windows and Office Update
sites.
This problem has only appeared sometime in the past 2 months. Prior to
May
this problem did not exist.

Verizon is not interested in doing anything further because they think it
a
computer issue and not an internet connection issue, even though the
internet connection is getting reset for some reason.

I am running XP Home, V5.1, SP2.

I occasionally download backup data files from a web site that tend to
get
as large as 20 or 30 MB. Recently, I have lost the ability to download
files this large. The download will begin and after part of the file
has
been downloaded, it will get stuck. After being stuck for about 45
seconds, a dialog box pops up that says I am unable to download that
file
because the connection to the server was reset.

When I first observed this, it would get stuck at the 4 MB level. When
I
tried doing this yesterday, I was able to get to the 8 MB level. I
have
not knowingly adjusted any settings to cause this, but they may have
been
changed while doing routine updates.

The technicians that run the web site say there is no problem with the
web
site, and my internet provider says there is no problem on their end
and
that the problem is probably due to a setting on my computer.

I saw article number 900900 in the knowledge base that referred to a 50
MB
limit for downloading, but the files I am trying to download are much
smaller than that. I tried to follow the directions in that article
and
set the limit at 50 MB, but it did not improve my download performance.

Does anybody have any recommendations on what I need to do? Thank you
very much in advance for your help!

Hi Jim,
Does your Connection is secure (you implemented a SSID and an Encryption
Key)?.
There is a setting on thwe router to limit the download, if this set then
to
what (value)?.
Did you scan your computer for malware and viruses, what protection
software
you have, some updates for Anti-Virus, Anti-malware recently caused
similar
issues.
Third party toolbars installed, graphic accelrator installed ( go to the
add/remove programs and check what there).
Run Disk cleanu up then run this command:
sfc /scannow click [OK]

To Phil:
Claymore correct if the Temp is corrupted it can effect the download
(corrupt the download or inturrpt the download procedure).

HTH.

Nass,

Thank you for your reply.

My home network is secure, but has not changed in over a year, and this
problem is new to the past couple of months. The router does not have any
settings to limit a download size.

I'm using Avast antivirus and Spybot. Both report a clean system, although I
know there could be something lurking that has not been detected. Both are
up to date.

I have a new NVidea graphics card to go with the new monitor I bought
recently. I'm not sure what settings it has that would affect this problem.
What should I look for?

I have had the Google toolbar installed for a couple of years, so this has
not changed. I ran the disk cleanup and the scannow command.

I can now download about 11 MB before the internet connection gets reset.
This is much better than 4 MB, but I still have a few backup data files that
are larger.

Absolute hogwash and cowardly. If you know and trust the site where you want
to download from, there is no danger in turning off virus programs to test.
You can also do a back-up and restore before downloading if you are leery. I
use no virus programs and have no problems. Study these newsgroup posts and
you'll see at least 90% of the problems are CAUSED by virus programs not the
curative of them. Dangerous solution---only your emotions not fact.

Really? 'Absolute hogwash and cowardly'? And YOU state 'Dangerous
solution---only your emotions not fact'?

From you, first a dangerous suggestion, then an
after-the-barn-door-missing-the-point suggestion. A downloaded file is not
the only vector for malware.

Comparing the trouble caused by anti-malware programs to the problem caused

Although I disagree with your point of view for many reasons, I'll

"Try shutting down all virus programs and then do a download," not "if
you are an experienced user and are absolutely sure that you can trust

To make a recommendation like yours without at least including such

Default Maximum File Size For Download

I teach college courses online, and the data file I am trying to download is
a backup of the information in one of my online courses. Because of this, I
am as confident as I can be that downloading this data file is safe.

I did try turning off my antivirus program and the Windows firewall, one at
a time, for the minimum time necessary to attempt a download. This had no
affect on my ability to download this file, and the internet connection got
reset at the same point as before.

Is there a maximum file size limit by your ISP? Maybe a chat with them will

Default Maximum File Size For Download

Use download manager software, sometimes also called download accellerators.
It will allow you to download even multi-gigabyte sized files intact,
regardless of how often your internet connection gets broken.

The source of the download problem could be entirely out of your control.
Whatever the cause, a download manager will resume interrupted downloads
from the point they were cut off.

I am running XP Home, V5.1, SP2.

I occasionally download backup data files from a web site that tend
to get
as large as 20 or 30 MB. Recently, I have lost the ability to
download
files this large. The download will begin and after part of the
file has
been downloaded, it will get stuck. After being stuck for about 45
seconds, a dialog box pops up that says I am unable to download that
file
because the connection to the server was reset.

When I first observed this, it would get stuck at the 4 MB level.
When I
tried doing this yesterday, I was able to get to the 8 MB level. I
have
not knowingly adjusted any settings to cause this, but they may have
been
changed while doing routine updates.

The technicians that run the web site say there is no problem with
the web
site, and my internet provider says there is no problem on their end
and
that the problem is probably due to a setting on my computer.

I saw article number 900900 in the knowledge base that referred to a
50 MB
limit for downloading, but the files I am trying to download are
much
smaller than that. I tried to follow the directions in that article
and
set the limit at 50 MB, but it did not improve my download
performance.

Does anybody have any recommendations on what I need to do? Thank
you
very much in advance for your help!

Hi Jim,
Does your Connection is secure (you implemented a SSID and an
Encryption
Key)?.
There is a setting on thwe router to limit the download, if this set
then to
what (value)?.
Did you scan your computer for malware and viruses, what protection
software
you have, some updates for Anti-Virus, Anti-malware recently caused
similar
issues.
Third party toolbars installed, graphic accelrator installed ( go to
the
add/remove programs and check what there).
Run Disk cleanu up then run this command:
sfc /scannow click [OK]

To Phil:
Claymore correct if the Temp is corrupted it can effect the download
(corrupt the download or inturrpt the download procedure).

HTH.
nass

Nass,

Thank you for your reply.

My home network is secure, but has not changed in over a year, and this
problem is new to the past couple of months. The router does not have
any settings to limit a download size.

I'm using Avast antivirus and Spybot. Both report a clean system,
although I know there could be something lurking that has not been
detected. Both are up to date.

I have a new NVidea graphics card to go with the new monitor I bought
recently. I'm not sure what settings it has that would affect this
problem. What should I look for?

I have had the Google toolbar installed for a couple of years, so this
has not changed. I ran the disk cleanup and the scannow command.

I can now download about 11 MB before the internet connection gets
reset. This is much better than 4 MB, but I still have a few backup data
files that are larger.

You show a lack of diagnostic and/or analytical ability. Apparently you
cannot teach anyone how to solve system problems.

I of course am not the greatest linguist but somehow posters to this group
need to have their fears alleviated and taught how to analyze system
problems. If they continue to have fears they can always post back and ask
further questions.
However, to deny shutting down virus programs for test purposes is the same
as handcuffing a person and then telling him/her to type a letter. I.E. In
diagnosing problems, use all tools available to you. Don't you do that?

Although I disagree with your point of view for many reasons, I'll
mention just one in rebuttal to that statement: your statement read
"Try shutting down all virus programs and then do a download," not "if
you are an experienced user and are absolutely sure that you can trust
the site from which you are downloading, try shutting down all virus
programs and then do a download."

To make a recommendation like yours without at least including such
caveats *up front* is reprehensible.

OK Jim, you have eliminated virus programs now give a wee bit more info.

I teach college courses online, and the data file I am trying to download
is a backup of the information in one of my online courses. Because of
this, I am as confident as I can be that downloading this data file is
safe.

I did try turning off my antivirus program and the Windows firewall, one
at a time, for the minimum time necessary to attempt a download. This had
no affect on my ability to download this file, and the internet connection
got reset at the same point as before.

This is much better than 4 MB, but I still have a few backup data files that
are larger.

Hi Jim,
You mentioned Google toolbar, did you update this toolbar (i.e.. do you have
latest toolbar installed?).
If you didn't then try to uninstall the toolbar and run a scan from an
online Vendor to get a second opinion about the health of your system.
Here are some links, but you can scan from any vendor you like, these just a

Default Maximum File Size For Download

Rather than acting out and flailing for a solution, why not spend more
energy on getting the information necessary for a diagnosis by suggesting
some SAFE diagnostic proceedures? One example would be to download a file
with a similar size from the Microsoft website (a service pack). That would
be a contribution. Denigrating other posters is not. Especially when
evidently they are better qualified to help with a diagnosis. There really
is no excuse for your newsgroup behavior.

| | | I have a Verizon DSL connection running through a Belkin
router.
| My
| | | desktop
| | | is hardwired to the router via ethernet cable and I connect
| | wirelessly
| | | to a
| | | laptop. I have been unable to download my larger backup files
| to
| | either
| | | computer. Both run Win XP Home Edition.
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | | I called Verizon's tech support this morning about a different
| | | connectivity
| | | issue. I lost the ability to connect to the internet using
| Internet
| | | Explorer, although Outlook Express worked fine for both email
| and
| | the
| | | Usenet
| | | newsgroups. They did two line tests. The first indicated
there
| was
| | a
| | | small
| | | problem with the DSL line. After rebooting the computer,
router
| and
| | | modem,
| | | the second line test indicated the connection was clear. I
| tried
| to
| | | download my data file again, and was able to get about 10 MB
| | downloaded
| | | before getting the dialog box saying the internet connection
has
| | been
| | | reset.
| | | This occurred on both desktop and laptop. This was an
| improvement
| | | because
| | | previously the connection was gettging reset after downloading
| about
| | 4
| | | MB.
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | | The time of day does not appear to have any effect on this
| problem.
| | I
| | | have
| | | tried before 8 am, after 10 pm and in the afternoon.
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | | I told the Verizon people that there are no problems with the
| web
| | sites
| | | I am
| | | downloading from because I can download the files from other
| | computers
| | | outside my home. I don't usually download large files from
any
| | other
| | | location, other than perhaps the Microsoft Windows and Office
| Update
| | | sites.
| | | This problem has only appeared sometime in the past 2 months.
| Prior
| | to
| | | May
| | | this problem did not exist.
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | | Verizon is not interested in doing anything further because
they
| | think
| | | it a
| | | computer issue and not an internet connection issue, even
though
| the
| | | internet connection is getting reset for some reason.

| | |
