Default Microsoft doesn't let me download SP2 - WHY?!??

I've tried doing Windows Update since Friday when SP2
came out. I've been doing it every day since then but
Windows Update still tells me there are no updates
available at this time.

I do have Automatic Update turned on 24-7. I have Windows
XP Home SP1 - which may be the reason I'm not getting it
yet.

I know Microsoft are being a bunch of smart @$$es about
this and only delivering 2.5 million downloads a day
instead of having hardware manufacturers (like Dell, my
computer's maker), deliver the update as well! I
downloaded the 266 MB version which says it's for
networks only (if you're gonna update Windows only to
multiple computers, and of course Microsoft says that if
you have a single computer to NOT download this update
and that a smaller version "is coming soon")

I think I should probably be able to use that version. I
ran the program and cancelled it before it started
installing anything... is it a good idea to do that??

SP2 won't be made available for download through Windows Update until the end of August and it won't be available through Automatic
Updates until the 16th.

Where did you hear the myth "2.5 million downloads a day"?
Pure fantasy probably started by an ignorant Microsoft hater.

According to the schedule SP-2 is not available to you.
About 16 August according to FAQ #6:

See this if you want SP-2 now:

As has been mentioned many times, SP2 won't be available to the general
public via Windows Update until the 16th.

That only applies to Automatic Updates Kurt.
With the other options available there is no total download limit.
However the link sheds light on something that may be twisted to mean
something different than intended
I can understand how you would focus solely on a limitation while
totally ignoring other options.
It does suit your objectives to ignore half the truth when it comes to
Microsoft.

Don't bother responding unless you simply like to see your own
post...which you seem to like to do.

Well it seems 2.5 million may be true but only partially.
The critics would have us believe it is the whole truth.
That limit only applies to automatic updates.
There is no limit for downloading the complete Service Pack 2 which
you or anyone else can do at any time starting last Monday.

Correct.

I do have Automatic Update turned on 24-7. I have Windows
XP Home SP1 - which may be the reason I'm not getting it

Incorrect. You aren't seeing it on Windows Update or receiving it via
Auto Update because MS hasn't released it via those channels yet.
They are phasing in the release of SP2 to make it easier on everybody,
bandwidth-wise. This makes sense.

I know Microsoft are being a bunch of smart @$$es about

Where exactly did you read about this "2.5 million downloads a day"
that MS is restrictring SP2 download too?

I think I should probably be able to use that version. I
ran the program and cancelled it before it started
installing anything... is it a good idea to do that??

You CAN use the 266 mb downloaded version to update your copy. It's
called a network copy because usually Network Admins download this
single copy then use it to update all their machines. Go ahead and
use it; that will lessen the likelyhood of the stroke you are on your
way to if you don't relax.

Yes, I know.

OP - "I do have Automatic Update turned on 24-7. I have Windows

Juppy - "Where did you hear the myth "2.5 million downloads a day"?

The "fantasy" was started not by a "Microsoft hater" but by a
Microsoft employee as the link I gave showed.

With the other options available there is no total download limit.

I did not say that there was. All I did was give a link that showed
that

I "focused" on supplying a link. You read a hell of a lot more into
supplying a link than I actually wrote. The 2.5 million a day limit
on Automatic Updates is not a "Pure fantasy probably started by an
ignorant Microsoft hater."

It does suit your objectives to ignore half the truth when it comes to
Microsoft.

ROFL! I supplied a link, Juppy! That's it! I offered no opinion
about MS at all.

Don't bother responding unless you simply like to see your own
post...which you seem to like to do.

LOL! Don't bother responding unless you simply like to yourself in an
even deeper whole than you already dug for yourself...which you seem
to like to do.

Seriously Juppy, take the stick out of your ass. All I did was give a
link that showed that you were the one jumping to the ridiculous
conclusion that the 2.5 million a day limit on Automatic Updates is a
"Pure fantasy probably started by an ignorant Microsoft hater."

Personally, I think doing the SP though AutoUpdate is just asking for
more things that can go wrong while doing the update.

plug his ears and sing "LALALALA" real loud so he doesn't have to hear
