DNS Resolver cache--can't flush
My home system is WinXP Pro, connecting by cable modem to
the 'Net and via a Nortel VPN to a server at work. My computer at home once was a networked computer at my work. At that time, an LMHOSTS file was enabled to resolve problems finding certain intranet sites. I have brought this computer home and am attempting to connect to the server at work via VPN. Several of our intranet URLs have changed since this computer was used at work. I am not able to connect to those sites when I use names rather than numbers. Looking at my IPCONFIG /DISPLAYDNS output, I am still seeing entries that associate the desired name with the old URL, not the new one. I have cleared out every instance of an LMHOSTS.SAM file I could find. I have run IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS over and over again. I still can't get rid of those improper DNS entries. My DNS resolver cache quickly fills up with new entries as I surf the Internet, but will not acquire the correct new entries when I connect to our intranet. When I do the FLUSHDNS, the entries acquired from Internet are removed, but not the entries for the intranet. I also have a laptop computer from work. When I connect that one to my router at home and engage the VPN, I get the right DNS service and I can use names in the browser rather than numbers. I can't figure out where those improper name-URL associations are residing and how to get rid of them. I have tried everything I could find in Knowledge Base. Here's something else that mght mean something. The DISPLAYDNS output indicates that the "time to live" for the cached internet records is 2016 but the "time to live" for the unwanted intranet records is 600373. I tried flushing the "arp" cache as well with no luck Thanks. Stan |
