Thumbs up spyware program

Hi to all
I am not sure if this is the right forum for the topic, so if it isn’t I apologise in advance. We have a family pc that has five users it is on twenty four seven and it strikes me that even with the best Anti spy ware and firewall you still get infected with Trojans, Worms, droppers etc. This leads you to have a myriad of anti spy ware programs on your pc. Last month I discovered just such a program called Ewido and was blown away by it. It has a friendly interface even for the novice, there are daily updates it even has a built in reg scanner. And it is free ware, but if you want to buy the full program it then comes with a real time spy ware scanner that sites in your system tray. I have now dispensed with the likes of spybot, spware blaster etc, although they are all good programs and just run Adaware and Ewido. I really think this program is worth a review. I am not sure but think it was designed only for XP. Hope this is helpful

Ewido is well-known to those of us who remove malware from users'
computers for a living. Don't forget to keep your antivirus current and
your subscription active. Ewido is not an antivirus program.

Ewido surprisingly DOES remove all the viruses I have given it and if it doesn't recognize
them, Ewido will update their signatures for the submission. The term "anti malware" is
quite suitable since it does both viral and non-viral malware.

I only use it as a "On Demand" scanner. I can't speak for its "On Access" capabilities for
the paid version.

I can also state it is not compatible with Win9x/ME. It is compatible with Win2K so
barrie's assertion "...itwas designed only for XP" is not true. Although I haven't tested
in on Win2003 Server, I am sure it will work on that OS as well.

Thanks for the additional information about Ewido, Dave. I've been using
it the same way you are - as an On Demand scanner when cleaning up a
client's machine. I uninstall it when I'm finished. I've learned that
putting trial versions of anything on clients' machines is generally
useless since they normally got in trouble because they let their av
subscription lapse anyway. I've never tried it on Win9x/ME but now I
know not to bother.

Hi David, I have the paid version with "On Access" running, however it has
never caught anything, NOD32 seems to be the first layer a parasite needs to
get by and it has'nt failed me yet. The only grip I have with it is that it
takes
1-4 CPU at idle, and I need to shut it down when burning a DVD movie,
otherwise the possibility of a bad burn about doubles.

Thanx Mike !

I have noticed that even with the free "On Demand" version has a NT Service "ewido security
suite control" but you can't enable or disable even with the syntax...
sc stop "ewido security suite control"

I am curious as to why a NT Service needs to be loaded for a "On Demand" scanner.

Hi
From the replies that my post has had I now feel that I should not have posted it. Firstly it was information for the less computer literate amongst us, and secondly I did not say it was only for xp. I said I was not sure, but thought it was. I feel that replies should be less curt or personalised.

Hi Barrie,
Don't feel like you were being putdown or anything like that, you found a
program (a very good one) and decieded to share it, that is what this group
is all about- sharing information, I guarantee that somebody who read your
post or who will read it soon will start to use Ewido because of it and you
will never know about it.

Yeah, I'm in agreement with you on that Dave. I hate all these programs
that turn themselves into a service. Why is it necessary? And it
definitely slows the machine down. Since I don't leave it on the
client's box, that isn't an issue but I don't think I'd want to leave
it installed anyway.

And to "barrie" - no one was being curt to you; you are being too
thin-skinned. This is Usenet and when you post something you have to
expect a response. I see that you are posting from "pcbanter" which is
one of those web interfaces that says it is a forum but really is just
sucking off Usenet newsgroup posts. Try using Usenet directly for a

I installed Ewido based on this thread and it found 14 (non cookie) problems
which Microsoft Antispyware, Ad-Aware and AVG Antivirus failed to identify.
