Default Xp Pro and usb plextor drive

I have a dell gx280 with 3 gigs of mem, 1 internal plextor 716al dvd/cd rw, 1
internal sony cd/rw, a lexmark X1150 printer (usb connection), 2 lexar usb
jumpdrives, an infrared remote and keyboard (the sensor is usb), and a multi
card reader (usb connection). The card reader, the printer, and the 2 jump
drives are not always plugged in. I don't use the reader or the printer much
so I just plug them in when needed. My machine is running XP pro with
service pack 2. I have all of the updates loaded and everything is working
fine. Recently I've been trying to hook up a usb plextor px-708UF dvd burner
and I can't seem to get it to work. I plug the drive in, windows sees it,
and give is a drive letter. When I put a dvd in and try to open it or
explore it get a message saying that the action cannot be completed because
of an I/O device error. I know the rom is good (I've tested it and it works
on other machines). Any help would greatly be appreciated.
