Default XP Pro Monitor/Adaptor Problems

Im running XP pro and recently had some problems which necessitated to
attempt a repair. After I got back up I noticed that the monitor was set
to default and the adapter was set to unavailable when I click
properties it comes up Vga Save and Non Plug and Play and Unknown,
Unknown. The driver is Vga Save Current Status (start, Stop) Started,
Startup type System. I have never seen such before. I tried installing
the real drivers ( Its a Radeon 9800 Pro) and it says cant install
please install a standard VGA driver first. Well I cant.
The control Panel, System Devices doesnt show a display adaptor and a
scan doesnt find one.

What can I do to fix this problem?

Thank you

Can you do it by way of Add/Remove Hardware in the Control Panel? Don't
make it scan, TELL it what you want to install.

I tried that and tried to install an adapter but the closest is a Rage
card, when I install any adapters I get a message that it is installed
but may not work because the device cant start.

Did you also reinstall the motherboard drivers?
