Default help - safe mode doesn't work

Can someone help -
I have a flat screen monitor set up as plug and play monitor and ATI Radeon
9600 video card with new drivers.
When I boot to safe mode - no picture, message "video signal out of range"
from monitor.
If I boot to "VGA enabled" it's ok, but then I'm not in safe mode, as all
the extraneous items seem to load.
This is a new problem since going to XP pro from 98SE - is there something
else I need to adjust?

Thanks for any help

Bruce

I would assume that's because flatscreen (LCD/TFT/etc.) monitors are
set to a fixed resolution.
