Default Application "not responding" after printing to unreachable printer

I've had a problem with a networked printer, which I'm pretty sure is not
related to the printer. If the printer is offline or otherwise unavailable,
attempting to print freezes the application (I've only done this with word,
but I've talked to others that have had the same experience with other apps).
This is a Brother laser printer connected to a print server, not via IP.
Anyone know this problem?

TIA,
