Programs Freeze when Save As used
Running XP, SP2.
When I use my office package, and choose File Save, then try and use the drop down arrow, the system freezes up. I have installed the reg edit pack for the HP web share. Also, whenever using the "My Computer" part, I open it, and it takes a very long time to finally show me the drives etc. |

an unresponsive pc can be caused by many (many) things and what you have noted may only be the tip of an iceburg. case and point: if you had a virgin windows o.s. with no other software installed, your pc would likely be funtioning at the speed of light. so at this time we have no idea about your system other than your mentioning of an hp program. in my experience, hp makes d*mn good printers and i have 3. but their softwares, sometimes bundled are simply cr*p, poorly written, bloated and likely to be spyware. a) i would suggest to uninstall that hp web share as it may be hogging all your resources and causing havic for your cpu and passed onto your o.s. b) run a utility to tune up your system like microsoft one care or systemmechanic. the above are tools that inspect and repair a wide spectrum of areas, most that are overlooked or off limits to ordinary pc users. however, there is a lot of information for regular pc users and here is a reasonable starting point: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/moredone//optimize.mspx not all of the suggestions contained in a single webpage at the above may work or apply to your issue, but some will and there are others via the "related links". another thing that i could suggest is that you can boot into "safemode" and see if in that mode the system seems more responsive than normal mode. if so, then this would be a helpful clue. keeps us posted....! - db "John M" wrote in message ... Sounds like you may have mapped drives that are not
currently available. See what drives are currently mapped that are unavailable in Windows Explorer and remove any that are unavailable. "John M" wrote in message ... Running XP, SP2. I have removed all vestiges from HP on the system.
At first, I felt part of the problem may have been one of the HP installed "card reading slots". Now, however, those have been removed. It is also having the same reaction, when I use My Computer, once opened, it searches for an extremely long time. Answering the next post also, I have made sure there are no drives mapped (I did have a network drive via our wireless connection). Thanks, John "´¯`·.. )))º`" wrote: an unresponsive pc can be caused by many (many) things and what you have noted may only be the tip of an iceburg. case and point: if you had a virgin windows o.s. with no other software installed, your pc would likely be funtioning at the speed of light. so at this time we have no idea about your system other than your mentioning of an hp program. in my experience, hp makes d*mn good printers and i have 3. but their softwares, sometimes bundled are simply cr*p, poorly written, bloated and likely to be spyware. a) i would suggest to uninstall that hp web share as it may be hogging all your resources and causing havic for your cpu and passed onto your o.s. b) run a utility to tune up your system like microsoft one care or systemmechanic. the above are tools that inspect and repair a wide spectrum of areas, most that are overlooked or off limits to ordinary pc users. however, there is a lot of information for regular pc users and here is a reasonable starting point: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/moredone//optimize.mspx not all of the suggestions contained in a single webpage at the above may work or apply to your issue, but some will and there are others via the "related links". another thing that i could suggest is that you can boot into "safemode" and see if in that mode the system seems more responsive than normal mode. if so, then this would be a helpful clue. keeps us posted....! - db "John M" wrote in message ... sometimes the delay may be as a result of the indexing service and cycling it to the opposite state that it is in now and for a few days might help and it wouldn't hurt. also, there may be an issue with the registry that may have been caused by the thousands of keys by the HP software. Not trying to be facetious, but as I mentioned their software is not desirable for a variety of reasons. it might not be a bad idea to go to microsoft.com and download these programs: PageDefrg and Autoruns. Autoruns will reveal a great deal about your processes and can modify the registry. Autoruns will also give you the option to see the processes under different users. This option can be found in the menu. if you find an entry/line item in autoruns that you want to disable, simply check it and double click the filename. The registry will automatically open and indicate the new state of the related key to be "disabled" what you might try first simply disabling all your startups - temporarily that is. then engage each one by one and see which one may be bogging your system down. there are other tabs that may require your attention as well. with pagedefrag, this is a neat program that will defrag the registry before loading the o.s. you mentioned loosing some devices after removing the hp program. you might want to seek for and install the "device drivers" only. however, keep in mind of the prior suggestions to use a wide spectrum disk utility. I think that it is imperative to eliminate all the possible little things that add up to the overall problem. after the muddy environment begins to clear with a disk utility, then it would be a bit easier to see the problems that are left.... - db "John M" wrote in message ... What I meant about the devices was I removed that HP Card reading device, so
the system would not try to search it. Thanks for the info, I will try and get those two programs. New note:
This does not happen in safe mode. I started in Safe mode, with Networking. connecting to network as always, and once a drive to server location has been mapped, I can open/save/manipulate files as I should be normal;ly. Does this help anyone help me :-) "John M" wrote: Running XP, SP2. When I use my office package, and choose File Save, then try and use the drop down arrow, the system freezes up. No mapped drives (I disconnected for test).
I open Excel (or Word) and create a new document. IMake some changes, and choose to save as. That is is. Freeze for almost 5 minutes. As a side note, with out any programs open, if I open "My Computer" it is several loooonnngggg seconds before it finds the drives and points (even with all drives disconnected).
