If you find that the behavior persists in OE, you may have a corrupt
identity. I can give you instructions on how to create a new identity.

I would NOT bypass the Recycle Bin or OE's Deleted Items folder, Stan! As I
posted in my reply to your other thread, it sounds like that machine may
have some serious issues.

You post using a WinXP SP2 machine: Is it the machine in question here?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

Has a Symantec/Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
machine (e.g., a free trial that was preinstalled when you purchase the
machine)?

Hi Robear,
I posted in the XP group because I thought it was an XP issue in addition to
an OE issue. Otherwise I would not have posted to another group. Sorry.
As to serious issues, my pc functions well in all other respects and as I
stated, now I do not have any deleted items returning so far. What is the
harm in bypassing the Deleted folder and the Recycle Bin? When I decide to
delete something it's because I have no more use for it and will have no
reason to retrieve it.
I use AVG AntiVirus v8, AdAware Plus, Spybot S & D, Spyware Blaster, and
Super AntiSpyware. I use the free version of Zone Alarm firewall. McAfee
came with my computer 3 years ago but I uninstalled it and reformatted
several times in the meantime anyway so there's nothing left. I did have
Norton AntiVirus for a while but uninstalled it using Symantic's Removal
tool and I use Revo Uninstaller regularly which doesn't show any sign of it
in my system. Right now my computer is running like it just came from Dell.
I've got my fingers crossed. Thanks for your efforts to help. I really
appreciate it.

Not a problem, although you did not mention the Recyle Bin in your post to
OE6 newsgroup and you did not mention OE in your post to WinXP Help &
Support. Both may be pieces of the same puzzle, hence my crosspost to Help
& Support and my reply to your other thread in Help & Support.

microsoft.public.windowsxp.general newsgroup.]

You might delete something in error. Better to have the deleted items in
Deleted folder or Recycle Bin and not need them than the other way around!
(I just replied to a user in another newsgroup who Shift+Deleted a file and
now he needs it for work!)

Also, you might be tempted to ignore what's already in Deleted folder and
Recycle Bin: Why clog your machine with unneeded files?

I use AVG AntiVirus v8, AdAware Plus, Spybot S & D, Spyware Blaster, and
Super AntiSpyware. I use the free version of Zone Alarm firewall.

ANY of the above (including Spybot Tea Timer and Ad-Aware's Ad-Watch, if
enabled) might be causing the deleted messages/files to reappear!

Hi,
I don't have the Tea Timer. I just very recently got Ad-Watch and I had the
problem prior to Ad-Watch so that's not the culprit. As to the safety net in
the Deleted folder and Recycle Bin, I only delete what I am positive I will
never need. I'm very careful about that and if I ever slip up I'll live with
it. So far all is well so I'll just see what happens from now on. Hopefully
I won't have to bother you again.

Default Deleted messages come back

Stan

Is it all deleted messages that come back or some?

When you compact copies of all Outlook Express folders before
complaction are placed in the Recycle Bin. It is possible to restore
these to Outlook Express. It sounds unlikely that you would do this but
please check that you are not doing this. When compacting is taking
place do you get any messages asking whether you want to Allow or Not
Allow some action to take place?

Have you tried manually compacting Outlook Express before you are
prompted to allow automatic compaction? Manual compaction gives you more
control over the process and defers automatic compaction for another 100
openings of Outlook Express.

In Outlook Express place the cursor on Local Folders and select File,
Work Offline followed by File, Folder, Compact All. Do not attempt to
interupt or stop the process until it has completed. Close Outlook
Express when it has completed.

After compacting check your Outlook Express folders are as they should
be. Then select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also select
Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More
Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore
point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Do you see any deleted messages returning other than those left by you
in the Deleted Items folder at the time you compacted?

Hope this helps.

Not a problem, although you did not mention the Recyle Bin in your

You might delete something in error. Better to have the deleted
items in Deleted folder or Recycle Bin and not need them than the
other way around! (I just replied to a user in another newsgroup who
Shift+Deleted a file and now he needs it for work!)

Also, you might be tempted to ignore what's already in Deleted
folder and Recycle Bin: Why clog your machine with unneeded files?

I use AVG AntiVirus v8, AdAware Plus, Spybot S & D, Spyware
Blaster, and Super AntiSpyware. I use the free version of Zone
Alarm firewall.

ANY of the above (including Spybot Tea Timer and Ad-Aware's
Ad-Watch, if enabled) might be causing the deleted messages/files to
reappear! --

Sorry. As to serious issues, my pc functions well in all other
respects and as I stated, now I do not have any deleted items
returning so far. What is the harm in bypassing the Deleted folder
and the Recycle Bin? When I decide to
delete something it's because I have no more use for it and will
have no reason to retrieve it.

You post using a WinXP SP2 machine: Is it the machine in question
here? What anti-virus application or security suite is installed?
What

Has a Symantec/Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on
the machine (e.g., a free trial that was preinstalled when you
purchase the machine)?

That makes no sense whatsoever, Gerry. Why use Shift+Delete when using
Delete (or CTRL+D) does not delete News messages to Deleted Items in the
first place?

Think about it...

Checked what you said. CTRL+D puts a mail message in the Deleted Items
folder. CTRL+D permanently deletes newsgroup messages.

Conclusion -might as well use Shift + Delete for unwanted messages
rather have to think which type of message is being deleted.

Is it all deleted messages that come back or some?

Just some

When you compact copies of all Outlook Express folders before complaction
are placed in the Recycle Bin. It is possible to restore these to Outlook
Express. It sounds unlikely that you would do this but please check that
you are not doing this.

No I don't do this

When compacting is taking place do you get any messages asking whether you
want to Allow or Not Allow some action to take place?

No

Have you tried manually compacting Outlook Express before you are prompted
to allow automatic compaction? Manual compaction gives you more control
over the process and defers automatic compaction for another 100 openings
of Outlook Express.

Yes

Do you see any deleted messages returning other than those left by you in
the Deleted Items folder at the time you compacted?

This does not always happen so I really don't know what comes back but it
is a lot.
As I reported, now that I followed Robear's suggestions and delete with
bypassing the Deleted Folder and the Recycle Bin
I am no longer getting back any deleted items.

Thanks for your efforts.

Sorry for the confusion. Did not mean that you suggested bypassing but that
in addition to following your suggestions about compacting etc I ALSO, at my
own peril, decided to bypass and all is well now. Don't know if the
bypassing is in any way responsible or not but again, all is well. Sorry I
was not more explicit.
