Have you tried using System Restore? Just kidding. ;-)

Paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK...

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

If you get this message, click YES.

System Restore
---------------------------
System Restore has been turned off.
Do you want to turn on System Restore now?
---------------------------

To access the System Restore Wizard, click Start, point to Programs, point
to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.

To add a shortcut to System Restore on your Start Menu if it is missing.

Paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK...
%AllUsersprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools
Right click on an empty spot in the right pane, point to New and click on
Shortcut.
Paste this in the box:
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
Click next.
Name it System Restore and click Finish.

To open the System Restore Wizard, click Start, point to Settings, click
Control Panel, and then double-click System.

You can access System Restore through Help and Support Center. To access the
System Restore Wizard, click Start, and then click Help and Support. Click
Performance and Maintenance, click Using System Restore to undo changes, and
then click Run the System Restore Wizard.

Manual steps to turn on System Restore

Look in Help and Support. On the top bar, all the way at the right, is a
button to click. I also have Windows XP. I believe I had already clicked on
Index in the Help and Support page, so maybe you need to do that to get the
bar I mention.
