Default Wireless does not work with security after SP3 installation

(Laptop with XP Pro, Zyxel Prestige router, Sweex USB Antenna)

After I installed SP3, there are problems with the wireless communictaion
between the laptop and the network: connection is made (although getting an
IP-address takes very long), status is shown as connected, but the Internet
cannot be reached. When running Windows Live Messenger Connection
Troubleshooter the message "your gateway appears to be off-line" error code
is 80072ee7.
When removing the (WPA) security, the connection runs normal, but once the
WPA-code is re-instated, the above problem returns.
Please advise.

Have you tried WPA2?

Default Wireless does not work with security after SP3 installation

My router (Zyxel Prestige 2602HW-61) does not support WPA2. It was delivered
by my ADSL provider and is the only one that they support.
However, it all worked fine until SP3 was installed ...

see if you have the latest firmware
http://www.zyxel.com/web/support_dow...el=P-2602HW-61

this model was discontinued.

Hey Barb,
I had already checked that and it is up-to-date. Because the ADSL-provider
does not support other modems I cannot replace it, but if you are all
convinced that this is the problem I could, of course, buy another router and
connect it with a cable to the Zyxel... would set me back some 45 euro's
(about 70$), but I would be willing to do so, if really sure that this would
solve my problem. Is this documented somewhere by Microsoft? (that SP3 does
not support simple WEP anymore, I mean)

Are you using WPA or WEP?

WPA-PSK with TKIP will work fine with SP3. This is what you should be
using if your router (like mine) doesn't support AES-CCMP.

Thank you.
I need to apologise as my router does support WPA2 after all, I was just
looking at the wrong point in the menus ....
So, I switched protocol, from WEP to WPA-PSK and bingo, the connection works
again.
My case is closed, but the conclusion seems that XP-SP3 no longer supports
WEP-encryption. I sthis correct?

is the Zyxel a router or a modem router combination? Does your ISP
have a user support newsgroup or forum where you can see what other
customers are doing? (or is there anything on dslreports.com).

this is not a Microsoft issue. However, WEP is just not safe. You
should be using a minimum of WPA-PSK.

I guess you missed my last answer in which I apologised and admitted that I
had found the WPA security in the modem-router after all hidden in the menu
at a place that was not logical to me.
Anyway, the system is now up and running with WPA2.
What remains, and here I differ in opinion with you: Microsoft should have
stated that SP3 no longer supports WEP-security. It would have saved me a
lot of time.
Nevertheless, thank you for your support!

Jim,
I have now found 3 cases (including my own laptop) where WEP-encryption was
used until SP3. In these 3cases connection was no longer possible after SP3
was installed. But also, the problems were gone after switching over to WPA2.

Hence my conclusion, but you may be right. For the sake of "academic"
curiosity, I would like to know what the problem really is. Any suggestions?
I could easily test at home.
