Given your problems in this thread, I'd have to disagree with you and
say the machine's still infected. Do NOT attempt to install any Service
Packs until an expert has reviewed your HijackThis log, etc., and has
given the machine a clean bill of health.

Or format & reinstall Windows (again). A Repair Install will NOT help!

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis
log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use
(in conjunction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix
anything on its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove
any hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log

review by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair
shop.

But PA Bear I formated it 5 times I worked on it 20 hours. I do not even
know how to do a repair. Of all the commands I did not see any that seem
to suggest repair. I formated C:\ Five times.

1. If the machine is on a network, it may be reinfected as soon as you
reconnect to the router.

2. If the machine isn't on a network but you've been using it online without
being fully patched, it could be infected again.

3. If the machine has been connected to the internet without a firewall, it
could be infected again.

4. If the machine has been connected to the internet without a functional &
fully updated anti-virus application, it could be infected again.

Now, assuming you're willing to format & reinstall again, will doing so
leave you with WinXP Gold (no Service Packs) or WinXP SP1? Answer me that &
I'll have some guidance for you.

PA Bear This is my plan. I found sp1 sp2 on cds and I just downloaded
sp3 and put that on disk. I have to fix it I do not like Linux.

You tell me what is wrong with my plan. I will do it your way. Reinstall
Windows no service packs I am connected to a router. As soon as
the install is complete I will install anti virus and a firewall. Then I
will load sp1 from cd then load sp3 from cd. Then go to Windows to get
the rest of the updates. What do you think?

If you will have WinXP Gold (no Service Packs) after doing another format &
reinstall, proceed as follows:

1. Before connecting the machine to the internet, enable the Internet
Connection Firewall.

2. Complete Steps #1 thru #6 in this post of mine:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...5afa8ed33e121c

[If you have SP2 and SP3 on CDs, use them instead of downloading the
installers. Skip SP1.]

3. Install a reliable anti-virus application and manually update it to the
latest definitions. If cost is a factor, I can recommend Avira AntiVir or
Avast 4 (free); I would not recommend AVG Free.

NB: Don't do *anything* else online or connect to any networks until you've
completed all of the above!

NB: If you've not Reset or Reinstalled your router, I would connect directly
via the modem until you've completed all of the above. Then Reinstall the
router.

NB: If the machine was on a network when it got infected, do NOT reconnect
it to that network unless those machines have been cleaned, too!
