Backing up My Documents to myFflash Drive?...

Hello, would someone kindly tell me what is the best way to back up My
Documents into my
4GB flash drive? I have WinXP. Tried dragging but not sure if it was
right. Was told to drag one or a few at a time but with so many files and
folders it would take forever. I prefer not to use a software as my
computer is old (still kicking) and it can't take more memory.

Is this the right way?:

Opened Windows Explorer. On 1st column I highlighted "My Documents", and
under "My Computer" I found my flash drive. On the 2nd column I highlighted
all of My Documents and dragged them to the drive... Also, while
transferring the files it would say: WYX to WYX...as if it were copying the
same folder... (?)

That sounds good. The only caution is winxp lets you relocate the 'My
Documents' directory so in general I would tend to drag using the right
mouse button down then select copy. It would seem this is not necessary
when using an external device.
A system with multiple users will have multiple 'My Documents' folders,
each pointing to user's stuff in documents and settings. I relocated to
my data 'D' partition, but I used tweakui to change location.
It's normal to see messages like copying x to x.

it. Thanks also for saying it's ok that the system says copying X to X.
Strange...but Windows is strange to begin with isn't it? LOL! I don't
think I have any partition, but I'll back it up to my flash drive. Also I'm
the only user in this computer, so everythign seems ok now. Thanks again!

While it's good for a temporary backup, don't depend on a flash drive
for anything you value. They can randomly lose all data or die
completely. I recommend an external drive and/or DVD backup in addition
to the flash drive. One backup isn't enough.

Thank you Terry, and you are right, but I intend to back up regularly, maybe
monthly. I try not to buy things that fit only my computer as it's an old
one (still kicking!) and I will get stuck with them. But I will buy another
flash to alternate, as someone explained it. When my computer dies and I
buy a new one, I'll try to buy an external or DVD backup as you suggested.
I appreciate a lot your good advice.

backup in years (horror, I know!) but would you happen to know why a popup
said
about each of my last 4 files: "Cannot copy XYZ: the directory or file
cannot be
created."? They were made at the same time as the preceding ones and with
the same system...Oh could it mean the flash is too full??? But wouldn't
it say so?

Yes, the type of flash or thumb drive can be used on any computer. The type
I use is SandDisk Cruser USB Flash Drive. U3 is a term for software that can
run from your thumb drive without having to be installed on your computer.
It has an Outlook type program that can syncronize your emails and you can
even email from the thumb drive if you are traveling and you use someone
elses computer and you have to install nothing. You can back up any files on
your hard drive and have them syncronized as well.

It's possible the drive is full. Open Explorer and right click on the
drive and see if there is space left. Are you using a backup program or
just dragging files?

so much for telling me it can be used with any computer, so I'll accelerate
my buying one or 2 more to back up more efficiently (especially since I want
to use Trend Micro to strongly scan my machine for the first time).

As to "U3 software that can run from your thumb drive without having to be
installed on your computer."... Does it come installed in the flash drive?
Or you buy it separately? I don't think mine has any software...

How do you synchronize files; i.e., "You can back up any files on your hard
drive and have them syncronized as well." Do you mean synchronizing my
backed up files in my hard drive with my flash drive? Also I still use
Outlook Express and not the upgrade Outlook, so would this OE program also
synchronize with my emails, etc.?

Please forgive my ignorance in these matters, Randem, I'm confused and I

I'm sorry Terry I didn't see your response until today. I went to see how
much space my drive has. It's 3.38GB out of 4GB. But as to those weird
messages I reported below, since then I realized I was doing it wrong and
have corrected it. I just dragged for the backup, instead of using a
program, and by now I've successfully backed up my files and folders and
will be doing it regularly thanks to all of you! )

Your flash drive needs to be U3 compatible and if it is it will already have
software on it. Look here http://www.u3.com/ for more information on it.

By syncronizing files I mean it will check with what is already backed up
and only replace the files on the flash drive that have changed since the
last syncronization thereby sppeding up your backups.

I use a 8gb drive for my backups and a 4gb drive to keep various computer
repair utilities on along with XP SP2 and SP3 and it all hangs from my key
chain.

Opened Windows Explorer. On 1st column I highlighted "My Documents",
and under "My Computer" I found my flash drive. On the 2nd column I
highlighted all of My Documents and dragged them to the drive... Also,
while transferring the files it would say: WYX to WYX...as if it were
copying the same folder... (?)
