Install XP on different drive\/

Currently have XP on C:, an IDE drive.
Would like to do a clean XP install to D: which is a SATA drive and clean
formatted.
Should I physically disconnect C:, install XP then reconnect C: to format it
or is there an easier way?
Tried something like this before and landed in a bit of a mess with drive
letters changing.
I also have E: which is a secondary IDE drive, both IDE drives are jumpered
as CS.

Best to disconnect all drives but the one you want to install XP on...
then when done...reconnect the others

you may have to load the SATA drivers from a floppy at the beginning of
the installation

Thanks for the reply, will disconnect the IDE drives first. Don't think with
this m/b I have to load SATA drivers but will check it out.

If the installer sees no HD, the drivers will be necessary

but if your XP cd has sp3 I'm pretty sure the drivers are included

Disconnect the drive XP is currently installed on and also the slave IDE
drive.
Check BIOS for list of boot devices/drives and change to the SATA drive if
your BIOS supports this option.
(Look for BIOS settings like: Enhanced or SATA/IDE mode)
Install XP on the SATA drive. Create a unique drive label (Example: XP_SATA)

Then power down, leave you SATA drive connected and
reconnect only the IDE drive with XP on it, boot and go to 'Disk Management'
Your IDE drive should be clearly identified. Delete the partition.
Now you should be able to partition the IDE drive to your needs.
Then reconnect the remaining IDE drive.

If you want the Microsoft dual boot menu to appear, don't remove the
IDE drive.
If you want the clean XP installation to have the D: drive letter,
don't remove the IDE drive.

Disconnected both IDE drives, installed XP on the SATA drive, reconnected
IDE drives and all went smoothly.
No need to load SATA drivers, I was using a slipstreamed XP/SP3 CD.
