Default Very slow opening context menu

My XP PC has recently become extremely slow at opening the context
(right click) menu when I right click any file. Typically about 8
seconds.

The only significant change I can think of has been adding a 3 TB
external WD hard drive, but I don't see how that can be the cause.
I've tried a registry clean. And I use Perfect Disk to defragment my
HDs automatically.

How can I isolate and fix this please?

Try one of the tools suggested here to temporarily disable items on the
context menu one by one until you find the one causing the delay. Then
decide whether you want to live with the delay or live without that
problematic context menu item.

Pleased to report problem solved.

First tried a System Restore back one week but that didn't fix it.
Then ran NirSoft's excellent (if daunting) tool, ShellExView.

The very first entry I tried disabling (because I recalled installing
it only a month ago and it did add an entry to the menu) was the
culprit. It's a tool from IObit for deleting reluctant files, called
Unlocker.

I've had bad experiences with IObit products myself.

I do have one called unlocker, but I don't _think_ it's from IObit; I
think I got it from http://www.emptyloop.com/unlocker/. Although I see
it is in my right-click menu (which usually opens in less than a second
or two), I can't remember using it from the how I usually use it is
that, if I try to delete a file which can't be deleted because something
is using it, instead of a popup just telling me that, a window pops up
listing the applications that are using the file, and offering me the
ability to stop them so I can delete the file. I find it useful.

I'd rather trust the guys in the lab coats who aren't demanding that I get up
early on Sundays to apologize for being human.

Aha. I just counted and it took 8 seconds for my context menu to
open. And I have unlocker....

But like yours, the readme file doesn't mention iobit, only empty
loop....

I've only used the program once or twice, with the popup you describe,
so I could surely remove it from the menu, or use the method up-thread
to find the problem entry, but not in the mood this morning.

Still, thank you all for the thread.
