Default DropBox Issue Recently. Google Drive Alternative.

Hi,

I downloaded DropBox 3.2.9 (offline installer) app in late March 2015. I
had no trouble using their "sync" system to upload software, images, etc. to
my "Share" folder at DB.

Recently, I could no longer upload anything unless I upgraded DB. I
downloaded DropBox 3.14.7 offline installer, but I got an error when I tried
to install it.

I tried installing it on another WinXP laptop and again I got an
error, "error 0X800b010a" (no longer resolution support at Microsoft).

ALTERNATIVE TO DB:

I have been using Google Drive as a cloud backup for my files for about 5
years. I am considering using a "Share" (to be created) folder in Google
Drive (instead of DropBox), but I have no experience in creating a "link" to
a file in a "Share" folder so I can send the "link" to a friend or relative so
he/she can download the file.

Is anyone using Google Drive instead of DropBox to "share" a file(s)
with someone?

Thank You in advance, John

This doesn't address your method of update. Dropbox will update itself
(and covertly - which I do not want). When it updates, it keeps shoving
a shortcut under my Start - Programs folder but that is not where I
want its shortcut. Because it is a covert update, you don't get any
preference choices on install, like whether or not to create Start menu
shortcuts. Because Dropbox updates itself, I am already at 3.14.7. So
its own covert background update has worked for me.

From where did you obtain the installer for Dropbox? Did you go to the
following URL?

https://www.dropbox.com/install
(click on "offline installer")

The popup dialog box says the download is 70.6MB in size.

Although a lot of users dislike all the prompting when UAC is enabled,
there is one advantage to having it enabled: it will ensure permissions
are set correctly on files during a software installation. I have found
some installs would not work with UAC disabled but completed okay with
UAC enabled (and me answering the prompts to allow the changes).
Another trick (with UAC disabled) is to ensure you run the installer
program under admin rights.

Is anyone using Google Drive instead of DropBox to "share" a file(s)

As I recall, neither Google Drive or Dropbox let you share files. You
can only share folders. So create a folder that you will use only with
a particular other party and share that folder with them.

As to using Google Drive, I gave up on it. Way too often it would fail
to connect in the background. That meant any files put into my local
Google Drive folder were not getting uploaded into my Google account.
There was no popup telling me that I wasn't connected. I don't remember
if the tray icon indicates lack of connection; however, Google Drive and
Dropbox would be the type of icons that I hide in the system tray
notification area aka systray. Dropbox and OneDrive would remain
connected while I had to keep re-signing in to Google Drive.

Hi Vanguard,

I went to www.dropbox.com and I don't remember the other
steps I took before I selected "offline installer" to download.

The downloaded file size was in the 70s MB.

GOOGLE DRIVE CORRECTION:

I should NOT have used the expression, "share". Actually, what I wanted
to do is send a friend or relative an email with a link to the file in my
Google Drive "Share" folder. Then he/she could click on the link or
copy/paste the link into a browser's URL slot in order to download that
particular file from my Google Drive's "Share" folder..

Thanks again for your reply, John

The free version of Dropbox has a storage amount limit. This can
be increased by getting people you send email invitations to
installing DB on their systems. 500GB additional for each person,
IIRC.

Sounds like XP is no longer supported in version 3.14.7.

I tried installing it on another WinXP laptop and again I got an

Support's been dropped? Not surprising. But do a search. I'm sure
someone else has had this happen, too, and maybe there's a fix.

Sorry. Only use Dropbox (version 3.14.7). Have had no problems, but
don't run it on XP which runs in a VM on a Linux host and is only used
for a couple specific apps, and is not connected to the Internet.
Others I share files with run it in W7 and 8.?, and OSX. No problems
there either.

SOLUTION FOUND:

When I first learned about Dropbox 3 or 4 years ago from a friend,
after I signed up, I was able to upload files via my FireFox v28 browser.
However, not long after, I could no longer upload any files via FF.
My friend told me that I need the DB app in order to upload files.

I just found out that I can use my FF browser to upload if I use
the "drag and drop" method. I never tried this before. By golly it
"works"!!!!

HOW I DID IT:

I put the file I want to upload on the "Desktop" and move it
to the right side. Then I log into Dropbox via FF. I open my
"Share" folder then drag the file from the "Desktop" over to
my "Share" folder. It works!!!!

John
