Default Taskbar items

I am using XP and I have the taskbar on the left side of the screen. I
do this because I have many windows open and I want to read more of
the description. For some reason, the items are now doubled and
sometimes tripled so they are just very short items.

Is there a way to change this to be a long list of single items?

"1. Right-click an empty area on the taskbar.
If Lock the taskbar has a check mark next to it,
the taskbar is locked. Unlock it by clicking
Lock the taskbar, which removes the check mark.

2. Point to the edge of the taskbar until the pointer
changes into a double-headed arrow, and then drag
the border to make the taskbar the size you want."

Just a guess,

Just a guess,

Also, while it's unlocked, right-click empty and select properties, and
see if "group similar taskbar items" is ticked or not. See if changing
it helps with your "tripling",

What about the empty space in the middle. That might have been made
by the line so that the quarterback can go through, but if not that, I
don't know why there is that big empty section. Maybe there is some
toobar that is empty. Right click on an empty spot and then click on
Toolbars. I only have one checked, Quicklaunch.

I don't think I have explained myself clear enough.
I have the taskbar unlocked. I can make it wider or narrower.
What I would like is a very wide bar with single entry on each line.
In the past, I am pretty sure, in the past, I could make the bar
pretty wide without causing double and triple entries on a single
line. (I could be mistaken)
Also I would rather not group similar icons.

The reason for this is that I would like to be able to read more of
the description.

OK, how about this one.

http://smallbusiness.chron.com/make-...-xp-67040.html

Click desktop surface, select
"Properties"

"Appearance" tab
"Advanced" button
"Item" menu, select "Active Title Bar"
"Size" - adjust it larger. Mine is 31, and never adjusted by me.
"OK"
"Apply"
(elsewhere... "Lock the Taskbar")

Paul

I tried that. Mine was 31 and never adjusted. I doubled that number.
It made the text larger but it didn't go from double rows to single
rows. I changed it back to 31 and made the bar wider.

It made enough of the text readable that I will live with double rows
and a wider bar.

Thanks

I think that can be done.

As to this last one, that's part of task bar properties.

I only have Vista to look at but for that, it's on the first tab,
"Group similar taskbar buttons". Uncheck that.

The reason for this is that I would like to be able to read more of
the description.

I don't like them grouped either, for that reason.

I just figured how to do this totally by accident. I can't even
explain how it happened (Ambien) but my tool bar was reversed when I
turned the computer on this morning. The task bar items were over the
quick launch icons.

I never knew that the task bar has a fixed size. If you take the
dotted line and make the task bar larger (longer) the launch bars will
be a full length.

I guess this not an issue with most people that use the task bar as a
single item on the bottom.

Good. I think I know what you mean and I should have suggested this. I
didn't think that was the cause. You have to unlock the task bar,
more the dotted line, and then loock it again and the dotted line goes
away. It moves a bit when the dotted line goes away so allow for
that. You must have made the part available very short.

I guess this not an issue with most people that use the task bar as a
single item on the bottom.
