Default customize taskbar -- remove deleted software?

When I access the "customize taskbar" menu to determine
the behavior (hide when inactive etc.) of various programs
in my notification area, there are several programs listed
which I have uninstalled (notably, McAffee Virus Scan).
They are no longer on the computer and I can't find any
traces of them even in the registry, yet their icons
appear in this menu. Is there a way to clear this menu
and only feature software I currently use?

Hello Alden,

I suggest you visit MS-MVP Kelly's website at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Note the instructions at the top of the page,
then scroll down to line 53,
(Remove Past Items From the Notification Area)

Right-click the hyperlink, then click | Save Target As...
|
to download the file, "xp_pastitems.vbs",
then double-click the file and follow the prompts.

--

The file "xp_pastitems.vbs" was coded by
MVP Doug Knox and MVP Kelly Theriot. They went to a lot
of trouble to automate the procedure which is documented
in the Microsoft KnowledgeBase article,

"How to Clear Past Items from the Notification Area"
from http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283084

_Jan;
I don't think he wants to remove them from the Notification Area. I
have the same deal as he does. I do not want to remove them from there. I
would like to remove them from the list in customize taskbar.
Or does Kelly's fix do just that?

Default customize taskbar -- remove deleted software?

Hello Wesley,

Yes.

The script "xp_pastitems.vbs" deletes two keys in the
registry, viz
"...\TrayNotify\IconStreams"
"...\TrayNotify\PastIconStreams"

If you run the script as it stands, you will lose the all
the "show/hide" customizations, but at least the unwanted
icons will be removed.

The icons for applications will now be added to "the (now
blank) list in customize taskbar" as they are launched,
but you may need to adjust the "show/hide" customizations.

--

Would you like to try an experiment?

- Open "xp_pastitems.vbs" in Notead.

- Delete the line containing "\TrayNotify\IconStreams"

- On the menu-bar click | File | Save As... |

- In the "Filename" box, change the name to something
like "xp_pastitems-TEST.vbs" (including the double-
quotation marks will ensure that the file is not saved
with a ".TXT" extension)

- Now double click "xp_pastitems-TEST.vbs" and follow the
prompts.

Please post a reply in this thread with your findings.

Tried your experiment. Followed your instructions. Ran the modified

that I could see.
OK, so I was bitten. I ran the original script and it removed the past
items from Taskbar/Customize.
Always ready to learn. But I am skeptical about something where the

Thank you for your replies. And thanks to Kelly & Doug.

Kelly;
Thank you very much for your reply. They (the icons) did not appear in
the Notification Area. My problem was they WERE listed in the
Start/Properties/Taskbar/Customize list. I ran the script and the past
items are not in the list. This is a good thing. The icons themselves
NEVER were a problem.
I just double checked through msconfig/Startup, not listed.
Thanks again for your reply.
Sincerely,
Wes

If they are still listed under Current and are still appearing in the
Notification Area, it would mean that they are either still listed in
msconfig and/or the runkeys are still present, if this is the case:

Go to Start/Run and type in: msconfig. Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck
accordingly. Then run this script to remove the disabled items from the
registry.

Hello Wesley,

Well, the "list in customize taskbar" is for the icons to

Hello Wesley,

Thank you for your feedback.

| But I am skeptical about something where the
| title doesn't sound right.

Well, the "list in customize taskbar" is for the icons to
be "show/hidden" in the Notification Area of the taskbar.

_Jan;
Tried your experiment. Followed your instructions.

Ran the modified
script. Went to Right click

Start/Properties/Taskbar/Customize/No change
that I could see.
OK, so I was bitten. I ran the original script and

it removed the past
items from Taskbar/Customize.
Always ready to learn. But I am skeptical about

something where the
title doesn't sound right.
Thank you for your replies. And thanks to Kelly &

Doug.

Hello Wesley,

Yes.

The script "xp_pastitems.vbs" deletes two keys in the
registry, viz
"...\TrayNotify\IconStreams"
"...\TrayNotify\PastIconStreams"

If you run the script as it stands, you will lose the

all
the "show/hide" customizations, but at least the

unwanted
icons will be removed.

The icons for applications will now be added to "the

(now
blank) list in customize taskbar" as they are launched,
but you may need to adjust the "show/hide"

customizations.

--

Would you like to try an experiment?

- Open "xp_pastitems.vbs" in Notead.

- Delete the line containing "\TrayNotify\IconStreams"

- On the menu-bar click | File | Save As... |

- In the "Filename" box, change the name to something
like "xp_pastitems-TEST.vbs" (including the double-
quotation marks will ensure that the file is not saved
with a ".TXT" extension)

- Now double click "xp_pastitems-TEST.vbs" and follow

the
prompts.

Please post a reply in this thread with your findings.

_Jan;
I don't think he wants to remove them from the
Notification Area. I
have the same deal as he does. I do not want to remove
them from there. I
would like to remove them from the list in customize
taskbar.
Or does Kelly's fix do just that?

Hello Alden,

I suggest you visit MS-MVP Kelly's website at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Note the instructions at the top of the page,
then scroll down to line 53,
(Remove Past Items From the Notification Area)

Right-click the hyperlink, then click | Save Target
As...
|
to download the file, "xp_pastitems.vbs",
then double-click the file and follow the prompts.

The file "xp_pastitems.vbs" was coded by
MVP Doug Knox and MVP Kelly Theriot. They went to a

lot
of trouble to automate the procedure which is

documented
in the Microsoft KnowledgeBase article,

"How to Clear Past Items from the Notification Area"
from http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283084

When I access the "customize taskbar" menu to

determine
the behavior (hide when inactive etc.) of various
programs
in my notification area, there are several programs
listed
which I have uninstalled (notably, McAffee Virus

Scan).
They are no longer on the computer and I can't find

any
traces of them even in the registry, yet their icons
appear in this menu. Is there a way to clear this

menu
and only feature software I currently use?
