Default hardware acceleartion bug

I was getting blue screen on AOL and an AOLTech advised
me to decrease hardware acceleration. I did this and now
video games don't work right. Tried to reset hardware
acceleration to original position but when I try to
select the Advanced Tab on the Display Window now, I get
an error message: An exception occurred while trying to
run "shell32.dll, Control_Run DLL "C:\WINDOWS\System32
\DESK.CPL", Display"

AOL screwed me up. Help!
