XP sees network, doesn't see gateway
Hi:
I have a home network set up with several computers. My ADSL connection is through a gateway connected to a switch, which connects to all the computers in the system. Everything works fine in the LAN, and all the boxes have internet connectivity. Recently I added a WinXP Pro (SP1) box. There's nothing on it except the OS, IE6, and a run of windows updates. The new XP box connects to the LAN ok, but I can't get it to see the gateway. Things I've tried: -- control panal/network connections/set up network wizard, trying both the "...connects through a gateway" and "other/connects through a hub" (which is the most accurate selection). --The XP firewall is disabled. --Under internet options/LAN settings, "automatically detect settings" both on and off. --I've compared the settings for internet options, and tcp/ip to the settings on the other boxes, and made them all identical. --If I try the CD which came with the gateway, I get an error saying it can't find it. --If I type the gateway's IP into Internet Explorer to set it up manually, I get a "page cannot be displayed". The one other thing I noticed -- when I first set up the XP box, I was able to get it onto the network and to the net. After downloading the 20 or so critical updates in one batch, I started having the problem. Anybody know? Thank you for any help. |
