Default short (8.3) filenames over home network (XP-NT4)

Hi, what could be the reason for conversion to short filenames transferring
files over a home network connection (LAN, no DHCP, NetBIOS over TCPIP)?
Both machines use long filenames and updated drivers (one is XP, the other
is NT4, I use a hub). I believe the problem to be in the network
configuration of the NT4-computer. Is there some registry setting to be
tweaked (tcpip,netbios,...)? I just can't figure out what the problem is.
Thanx.
