Default Downloading stops for no reason ...

Downloading used to be an easy job. However, it's getting more and
more difficult.

Used to be that whenever I download stuffs, where-ever I downloaded it
from, downloading itself poses no problem. I could even download an
entire CD-ROM ISO content, over 700MB in size, in one shot.

Then things started to degrade.

First, it was the download from file-sharing services such as
MegaUpload or RapidShare that gave me problems. The download just
stops in the middle for no apparent reason.

At first I thought it was the ADSL modem or port problem. It wasn't.

Then I thought it was the ISP throttling bandwidth. It wasn't either.

At the time, downloading from plain-old HTTP or FTP sites were still
okay. Only file sharing services such as RapidShare or MegaUpload that
gave me headaches.

Then, this thing turns uglier.

Downloading from regular FTP sites, or even downloading a PDF file as
small as 4MB would just stop in the middle.

So I thought, hey, it must be the browser.

Changed my browser, the problem persisted.

Change browser again, hey, the same.

At that time, web pages are still okay, even webpages with lots and
lots of pictures open fine.

Now, things has gone from bad to worse.

No matter which browser I use (Internet Explorer 7, Firefox, Safari,
Opera), sometimes the webpage would just load half-way.

Click on the "reload" page, the page reloads from scratch ... and
stops at half way.

Webpages with lots of pictures fair the worst. Pictures loads
halfways, some even didn't load. There are all sorts of things that I
just can't explain anymore.

So now, to all of you with so much experiences ----

What the heck is wrong with my computer ????

I am connecting to the Net via ADSL. Aztech modem.

PC is Pentium Duo-Core based. OS is XP Home. 4GB of RAM. 250 GB of
Hard Disk.

I have scanned my PC with anti-virus softwares up and down, no virus.

I have also check the firewall settings. Nothing wrong.

Trojans? I dunno. But so far, Norton isn't telling me anything.

So to all with so much wonderful experience ---- is there _ANY_
possibility that some settings in my PC has been changed somehow, in
causing the downloading problem???

BTW, check the line also. No stoppage, no signal drop. Everything
normal.

Can anyone please tell me what is wrong with my PC ????

Please, I need your help.

Thank you !

Try clearing the cache, history, cookies etc from all your browsers.

Unfortunately, Norton itself is a pretty big target...
so try disabling Norton
and scanning your system with Spybot S&D
and another virus checker such as AVG or Avast.

If they pick up a lot of things that Norton missed,
it would be time to get rid of Norton

It happened with or without Norton or any other virus checker and/or
spybot checker.

I have more and more suspicions on the OS itself. Dunno which register
or whatever internal settings that has gone wrong. Problem is, I have
no idea how to diagnose the problem.

Did that... in fact, just one minute ago, I powered up the Opera,
click on the "Tools" --- "Delete Private Data" thing to delete all the
private data, cookie, cache, and then test downloading from
rapidshare.

The download started with 15KB/s, then 14, then 10, then 8, then 3,
then 1.8, then 0.3, then a "?"

Download dead again.

Just that when I try to go other places ... it just stalls ....

AAARRRGGGHHHH !!!!

Problem is I can't reformat the disk ! Lost that damn XP disk, and
don't feel like using Vista !!!

Here's the figure I got when I use another computer to access the same
line ---- 518 kbps download, 216 kbps upload.

stops in the middle for no apparent reason.
Thank you !

Okay, here's one for you. I had issues like this once. I fought with
the ISP for weeks. 'fought' is an exaggeration, but. I finally got
up the tech ladder and they really pointed me to my system. I replace
routers and cables. I could not get a consistent problem, it was there
once and then not there. Took weeks if not a month to get from start to
end of this. But the end was......hold your hats.... the gigabit nic
card on my motherboard was dropping data talking to the router. And
when it happened it got worse and worse till it stopped. I finally
went out and bought a plug in 10/100 card for $9 and bingo, never a
problem again. And I was using either a linksys or netgear router.
Not the off brand stuff. Both routers did it. I even tried plugging
directly into my cable modem. (my provider just gave me a cable modem
and I had to buy / supply a hub or router to get multiple PC's).

Since then I've changed to a new provider that gave me a combo
router/modem and its wireless all in one box. And you know, I've
pulled the nic card out and gone back to the gigabit card and all works
well. Actiontec router with Verizon FIOS.

Not that this is your issue, but........... The info is there for you.

Seems as if your TCP/IP stack has been compromised.
You need to download "Hijack This", run it and upload the log to one of
those sites where it will be examined by experts.

Get it he

I know you feel that Norton has been ruled out, but you may need to
re-examine whether all components were fully removed.

However, here are some other suggestions ( found using this search:
http://www.google.com/search?q=tcp+t...e=utf8&oe=utf8 )

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314067
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727023.aspx
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/169790
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870702
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308007

This is one of my favorite methods, but read the article completely:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

Start Run cmd OK netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Network stacks can be screwed up for a lot of reasons. I like the command
line version of restoring the stack rather than repairing in the GUI like
older versions of Windows... it's so easy to do. You'll need to reinstall any
3rd party network security software if it works.

Also see if you have Pure Networks Port Magic, Toshiba Config Free, or AOL.
These can lead to a variety of networking problems and are safe to uninstall.
Make sure that you don't have any VPN or connection/web accelerator software
installed. If all else fails you can use msconfig to enable a minimal startup
and see if the issue persists.

This may or may not work so if you want take a chance. Download a free
utility called CC cleaner from http//www.cccleaner.com

install it and run the cleaner. This cleans up unnescary files on your
computer such as temporary internet files and a lot more Best regards
