Default Winsock problems and now no Explorer or icons

Hello all. I have Windows XP Professional and I am going nuts. All was
fine until I could not connect to the Internet. After ruling out my
connection (that works fine), I played around and thought my WINSOCK
file was corrupted.

I still had START so I typed in REGEDIT and deleted WINSOCK and
WINSOCK2.

Now I have no icons on my desktop and no START or RUN. I have nothing.
All I have left is Task Manager when I tried to type in recover or some
other commands (I don't remember), I get an error message "Can't find
Explorer.exe as well as Browse.dll

Any ideas? I am using a friends computer next to mine and I have to
keep unplugging and reconnecting both computer to get to the internet.

Thanks for any help! Oh, I do not have any Disks.

From the Task Manager you should be able to lauch System Restore and
roll back the installation to a point before the problems. To launch
System Restore run this in the Task Manager's File menu New Task (Run) box:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

If that doesn't work boot the computer to Safe-Mode with Command Prompt
and try running the same command there.

Hi John John,

I tried that and I kept getting error messages which said:

WININET.DLL not found

or

EXPLORER.EXE missing (or could not be found)

or

BROWSE.DLL not found

Andrew, I will try what you said and if that doesn't work I guess I
have to drop off my computer at some repair place, ouch!!

Funny thing is I have my wallpaper and it looks funny without any Icons
on it. I can see all my files on my hard drive but can't do anything
with them.

In Safe Mode, I clicked on "Last Known Good Configuration" and Debug or
something like that. It's not easy getting Task Manager up but somehow
I do after trying several things.

I wish I knew the commands but I don't. I did do a CHKDSK in Safe
Mode and it verified everything. I also wish my computer came with
Disks but it didn't.

I did get this line in some window I was in:

C:\Documents and Settings\NotSmart:

or was it, C:\NotSmart\Documents and Settings:

or something like that.. duh!! I feel so dumb, I really do...

I had Icons until I deleted both Winsock.dll's and used Last Known Good
Configuration.

Think I should just drop it off at a repair place? My computer is only
2 years old or so.. I wish I was computer savvy..

Try it from a Safe-Mode with command prompt boot. Tap the F8 key when
you boot the computer and select the proper boot option. If it can't
run from safe-mode do a repair install.

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Disconnect all unnecessary external peripherals before you start, when
you install Windows you should only have the monitor, keyboard and mouse
connected to the computer. Disconnect other devices like printer, USB
dives, flash drives, joysticks, webcam, etc.
