Default Perfmon aborts on Counter Logs

I can run the perfmon System Monitor on the Windows XP SP2 computer with no
problem. I can define a Counter Log with the same indicators with no
problem. When I try to start the Counter Log I immediately get an error log
event:

-----------------
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7034
Date: 7/10/2008
Time: 12:33:44 PM
User: N/A
Computer: NAME-TAG
Description:
The Performance Logs and Alerts service terminated unexpectedly. It has
done this 1 time(s).

-----------------

What's the problem and how do I fix it?

I have searched the internat and have not been able to find anything on
this. I am cross posting this in two groups because I am not sure which
group is more germaine.

Thanks for any help,

Joe M
