Default Lost external HD

My external Lacie HD used for daily backup has disappeared. The HD is
recognised immediately on other PC's so I know it is OK. I've tried removing
all mass storage devices from the hardware list but the PC will not recognise
it.
I have checked the error log and have multiple messages which appear to
coincide with the loss.
Here's the message:

'The server's configuration parameter "irpstacksize" is too small for the
server to use a local device. Please increase the value of this parameter. '

Could this be the reason and if so how do I increase the value?

Thx. I have done this. IRPStackSize did not appear in Parameters so I
followed instructions and made new entry.
I note that this error message relates to AV specifically and not to the
coincident problem of external HD recognition; a problem I still have.
