Why bother to point that out when I implied as much in my earlier post?

Zone Alarm now provides more than just the original firewall!

But the version 4 that was mentioned - doesn't.

Why does anyone use ZoneAlarm in the first place? Do they really believe
that scanning outgoing messages
is necessary? What real value has ZoneAlarm?

I updated my copy of ZoneAlarm to 8.0.065 and have found that this has a
reworked interface, reduced functionality e.g. no zones and breaks system
restore! What are ZoneAlarm doing?
I have now reverted to 7.0.483 but accept that I will have to find a
different Firewall at some stage.

Zone alarm used to be the dog's whatsits of free firewall applications.
But now that it is run by a commercial company just about anything is
better. Zone Alarm have had several problems with updates that break PCs,
but the biggest problem of all is the interminable time it adds to a PC's
boot time.

Version 5.x.x was tha last incarnation that was any good.

Are you still getting virus database updates for that old a version?

I use ZA a a firewall. 4.5 free has no extra mumbo jumbo.
I use a A-V program for the anti-virus part.

Hate programs that try to be everything and really isn't anything.

ZA 4.5 is a small firewall. Last vesion before they started adding
everything else.

Exacly why I don't use the new versions.
They are HUGE and SLOW becuase they have added to much junk.

I allready have a good A-V program.
I don't need ZA to use up my resources with another A-V part.
I just need a simple firewall (and that is the 4.5 version)

I like to keep an eye on what applications try to do what.
My system would proberbly be quite as safe without, but I
like to see what is happening. ZA 4.5 does just that
(without adding lots of thing I don't want as the new ones)

I allready have other programs for A-V and Spyware handling

Why/what do you need to know about a good running application?

That is a good guess on your part. He believes registry cleaners solve
everything.

Perhaps your registrty cleaner fixed the problem before you used system
restore.

Recently, I received an automatic notice from ZA saying that V8.0.065
was available for download. As I had used ZA since Version 4
relatively trouble-free, I upgraded. Everything seemed to work fine.

Then yesterday, I tried to do a "System Restore" on my Dell XP SP3
machine and found that the function was broken. After trying a
number of tricks, I finally called Dell tech support. I spent about
an hour working with a guy who finally told me that I would need to
do a complete re-install of XP. At that point I said thank you very
much and bailed out as my computer was working fine except for the
restore problem and I wasn't about to go through the hell of a
re-install.

Then, I got lucky and read your post, un-installed V8 and
re-installed V7. Voila! Problem solved.

Now I realize that I should have backtracked to see what recent
changes I had made-- and I usually document them -- but this ZA
upgrade seemed so unrelated to the restore function problem that it
just didn't occur to me that they could be related.

Thanks, "T". One more lesson learned

Huh: no such problems here. Wonder what the difference is? I used
Restore yesterday to back up the system files to two days ago; worked
perfectly. V8 was installed a couple weeks ago IIRC.
Anyone check with ZA?

Presumably because he wants to monitor and control outbound traffic.

Why don't you revert to the Windows Firewall?

It doesn't say anything when programs acsess the net.
I like to keep a track on what programs access the net.
(I know malware CAN bypass that, but my A-V and spyware
program cleans those away, but I still like to keep an
eye on the other programs).

I also have a NAT-router with a hardware FW, so I really don't need a
firewall if it comes to that. And I started using the 4.5 ZA instead
of the Windows FW because I liked it better one time.. :-)

Why/what do you need to know about a good running application?

It's not always that I want all Windows-services and other legal
program to connect to the net (or even more act as a server).

And I'm interreseted in seeing what programs actually access the net
(you would be surprised that many programs that really have no need to
access the internet still tries to do that for some reason :-)

if you think that ougoing messages are the only worry, then you need to do
more learning about how malicious software operates, ie trojans, keyloggers,
and etc.
Usually they don't send messages, but contact a remote website and send data.
usually your most important data, ie your banking password, logons for
websites, id data and much others.
