Default Midi sound/mute problem - XP Pro

We have been having intermittent problems with the midi sound setting. We
have Windows XP Pro installed.
There are times, especially after a Windows update, that the midi sound
setting goes to mute. Even after I attempt to reset it to high, using
Control Panel, it doesn't take. I will make the change but I am unable to
"Apply" it, although I can click OK. Unfortunately, it doesn't take and midi
is muted. It also happens with some email I create, whereby I must manually
change the code. By the way, I'm not the only person who complains about
this problem... several of my friends have the same problem, especially when
placing a midi file in the background (Outlook Express).
How do I correct these problems?
Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

The volume setting ranges from -10000 to 0 with -10000 being off and 0 being
full volume.

Before you insert the background sound you need to make sure your volume
setting is correct. Double click the speaker icon by the clock. For a MIDI
file it will use the volume control labeled "SW Synth" or something similar.
It may vary depending on your sound card.

You can check your settings by clicking the Source Tab at the bottom of the
Compose Message window and looking for this tag BGSOUND balance=0
src="filepath to soundfile" and setting the volume to zero (0).

If not already there, View | Source Edit - Check it.

Note that anytime you get an e-mail with a low volume MIDI, it will reset
the volume. That is the more likely reason rather than an update.

Bruce

Thanks. The sound volume Icon was missing from the toolbar. I added it and
the problem was resolved.

Thanks so very much... for the prompt response and resolution.
