COM 3 is not a normal comm port in the standard XP install. COM 3
would normally show up when you install an internal analog dial-up
modem. Does all your other devices show up?

Default Win XP Serial device driver in Device manager

thank you all. at present working modem uses com4 assigned by the computer.
some times i get error msg 633 on startup, but then i choose last known good
config and it works. i dont want to spend any more time on this now, but i
plan to find out what really went wrong with the original modem com3 port.
i'm also looking for a usb external modem.
thank you again.bye

COM 3 is not a normal comm port in the standard XP install. COM 3
would normally show up when you install an internal analog dial-up
modem. Does all your other devices show up?

What comm ports are listed under Device Manager -- Ports ?

What is the setting for all / any internal "dial-up" modems?

Device: ECP would / should be your parallel printer port. You might
want to re-configure the modem onto COM 1.
