Default XP Pro SP3 - Shutdown Hangs - Shell Extension

My system has for some time failed to shutdown without asking to to "end now"
for a program that is only listed as "System Shell Extension."

How do I find out what this is and "put it to rest?"

Nothing shows in system log, and there are no other symptoms. No drivers
that show issues, nothing that malfunctions. The only symptom is that I need
to wait as the machine shuts down to tell it to "end now" or "cancel" so that
the machine will shutdown.

BTW - the software install forced reboot does not have this issue but my
selection of a reboot from the shutdown still encounters this.

Sure could use a hint as to how to find or resolve...

Thanks much!

Hi:

Download and install Shell Extensions Manager from
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html.
Once installed open and take a look and see if any are Disabled etc.

Thanks for the post!

Downloaded the util and ran.

Nothing disabled or otherwise notable but it is highlighting multiple
extensions from Symantec, Google, Adobe, DataViz, Corel, Nero, FedEx, Palm
and NVIDIA (using the Intel MB video system) with a pink color.

BTW - checked the other sites you recommended prior to my post and I didn't
want to restore if avoidable.

Short of disabling one at a time - anything else that would lead you to
suspect one vs other? If not - I will disable one at a time to see which it
is.

If I disable one, do I need to enable using the interface after boot or will
the reboot enable?

Thanks

Here's a procedure for you with things like that: It's called the rule
of halves.

Kill half the tasks. If the problem goes away, it's in the half you
killed. If not, it's in the half still running. There, half are
eliminated already.
Kill half of the ones that are left. Same as above.
Kill half again ... you'll weed out the culprit much quicker than one at
a time.

HTH,

Twayne
